With MARTYR, Rosegarden Funeral Party move beyond the promise of their earlier material and deliver something far more complete: an album in which gothic romanticism, post-punk urgency and huge melodic hooks exist side by side. Released in 2019, the record feels less like an exercise in nostalgia than a declaration of identity. The ghosts of classic goth and new wave are certainly present, but Rosegarden Funeral Party make them burn with a very modern intensity. From the opening seconds of "Fade to Black," the difference is immediately apparent. The song charges forward with an almost reckless energy, shifting between a danceable new-wave pulse and a much heavier rock attack. Bass, synths and guitars all push in the same direction, but the real center of gravity is Leah Lane's voice. Powerful without losing vulnerability, it turns the song from an effective opener into something genuinely commanding.
