Rosegarden Funeral Party
Darkness alone does not make great post-punk. What matters is what hides inside it. On THE CHOPPING BLOCK, there is plenty: longing, anxiety, romantic despair, theatrical intensity, and above all a restless energy that already shows why Rosegarden Funeral Party stand apart from simple 1980s revivalism. Across its six tracks, THE CHOPPING BLOCK creates a remarkably coherent world of dark wave, goth, new wave, and post-punk. Instead of treating those influences like museum pieces, the band gives them urgency and motion. This is music that looks back without sounding trapped in the past. Musically, the record remains rooted in goth, darkwave, new wave and post-punk, but Rosegarden Funeral Party sound more expansive than a simple genre description suggests. Guitars, keyboards and Dean Adams' driving percussion provide the foundation, while Scott White's bass work gives the songs their momentum. Additional saxophone, trumpet and flugelhorn add subtle colour to the arrangements without disturbing the band's dark aesthetic. Leah Lane wrote the music and lyrics and handled vocals, guitar and keyboards; the album was produced by Lane, White and Michael Briggs.
