Bragolin
Dark guitars, driving drum machines, and an atmosphere somewhere between a late-night dancefloor and a post-apocalyptic movie: I Saw Nothing Good So I Left is the debut album by the Dutch dark wave project Bragolin, released on March 24, 2018. Bragolin is the project of Edwin van der Velde from Utrecht, Netherlands. Musically, the album combines dark wave, post-punk, gothic rock, and shoegaze influences. Its sound is strongly inspired by the 1980s, with deep vocals, baritone guitars, synthesizers, and electronic drum beats. At the same time, influences from psychedelic music and 1990s shoegaze give the album its own distinctive atmosphere. The opening track, "Into Those Woods," immediately introduces Bragolin's signature sound. A hypnotic rhythm, memorable guitar melody, and dark vocals create a mysterious and melancholic atmosphere. The song later became Bragolin's best-known track and has developed into a modern dark wave club favorite. Throughout the album, Bragolin maintains this dark mood while giving each track its own character. "To Hide To Shine To Cross" is energetic and direct, while "This Grotesque Dance" emphasizes the strange and almost cinematic side of the record. The title track, "I Saw Nothing Good So I Left," perfectly captures the album's overall feeling: melancholic, distant, and haunting, but still surprisingly catchy. Other tracks such as "Tired Eyes Tired Feet," "In Our Field Of Oaks," and "Take Us Down" continue to build the album's gloomy atmosphere. The final track, "Charcoal Teeth And Lies," is the longest song on the record and provides a fittingly dark ending. An important influence on Bragolin's music is post-apocalyptic and horror cinema. This can be heard throughout the album. The music often feels like the soundtrack to an old horror movie, creating images of empty streets, cold landscapes, darkness, and isolation.
