Steve Gunn's self-titled debut is a fascinating document of a guitarist at the beginning of a remarkable career. Originally released as a CD-R on Onomato in 2007, the album was recorded to 4-track in Gunn's Brooklyn apartment and is entirely instrumental. Across four long-form pieces, Gunn moves freely between American primitive guitar, meditative drone, and free improvisation, creating music that feels exploratory and intimate while already displaying the distinctive sense of space that would define much of his later work. Nearly two decades after its original appearance, Abandon Ship Records presents the album's first official pressing on vinyl and professionally manufactured CD. The recordings have been remastered by legendary Norwegian sound artist Lasse Marhaug, while the original material remains strikingly direct and unpolished. Limited to 500 LPs and 200 CDs, this edition makes an important early recording by one of American experimental guitar's most influential contemporary figures available again in a definitive physical format.
