Randy Weston's Uhuru Afrika is one of the earliest examples of the blending of African rhythms and progressive socially conscious jazz, and is truly a landmark album for 1960. Featuring a 24 piece big band and lyrical content from none other than Langston Hughes, Uhuru Afrika belongs on the shelf next to Max Roach's 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite (CRNBR 16024LP) and Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um (1959). Banned from apartheid South Africa, this is Randy Weston's magnum opus.
