Compact Disc Release features 4 Bonus Tracks. The Gregg Turner Group is an American band founded by retired math professor Gregg Turner that was hatched in 2019 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Turner's musical pedigree heralds back to LA's punk-rock Angry Samoans (of which he was a co-founding member, co-songwriter, rhythm guitarist and sometime singer) in the 1980's. He also recorded a one-off 6-song 12-inch vinyl EP with Samoan partner-in-crime Mike Saunders; released as The Mistaken (1987), this has suddenly been gaining newfound social media traction, and is more redolent of a crude 60's heavy pop-garage sound than the lunatic punk tantrums ejaculated by the Sams. The Samoans eventually imploded in 1991 and several years later Turner spawned a 60's caveman-stompy musical amalgam (a la Kinks, Troggs and Velvet Underground) that he called The Blood Drained Cows (the band name was created when, upon first relocating to New Mexico from LA in 1993, Turner spotted an article in the local newspaper that reported findings of eviscerated plasma-drained cow corpses in the hills behind Santa Fe; "just a bunch of blood drained cows" noted an investigating veterinarian). Turner released two cd's under the Cows umbrella (the eponymous Blood Drained Cows produced by Jeff Dahl in 1998 and a follow up effort in 2003 entitled 13, produced by Andy Shernoff of the Dictators). Of note, both releases included electric autoharp wizard Billy Bill Miller who gained repute for his musical sorcery backing Roky Erickson in the late 1970's as one of the Aliens. Cooling off his Cow hoofs eventually, Turner ultimately navigated more "neo-folk-punk-doo-woppy" (Rolling Stone, 2015) solo yearnings by way of Jonathan Richman and Del Shannon and released two solo efforts (Plays The Hits 2013 and Chartbusters! In 2017). Sometime after this, Turner coagulated the talents of Santa Fe musical luminaries Sarah Meadows (bass, harmony vocals), David Barsanti (drums) and lead guitarist Aaron Anderson to create the underpinning of what now makes the rounds as The Gregg Turner Group. |
