Alvvays' third
album, the nervy joyride that is the compulsively lovable Blue Rev,
doesn't simply reassert what's always been great about Alvvays but
instead reimagines it. They have, in part and sum, never been better.
There are newly aggressive moments here-the gleeful and snarling guitar
solo at the heart of opener "Pharmacist," or the explosive cacophony
near the middle of "Many Mirrors." And there are some purely beautiful
spans, too-the church- organ fantasia of "Fourth Figure," or the
blue-skies bridge of "Belinda Says." But the power and magic of Blue
Rev stems from Alvvays' ability to bridge ostensible binaries, to fuse
elements that seem antithetical in single songs-cynicism and empathy,
anger and play, clatter and melody, the soft and the steely. The
luminous poser kiss-off of "Velveteen," the lovelorn confusion of "Tile
by Tile," the panicked but somehow reassuring rush of "After the
Earthquake." In October 2021, when they arrived at a Los Angeles studio
with fellow Canadian Shawn Everett, he urged them to forget the careful
planning they'd done and just play the stuff, straight to tape. On the
second day, they ripped through Blue Rev front-to-back twice, pausing
only 15 seconds between songs and only 30 minutes between full album
takes. And then, as Everett has done on recent albums by The War on
Drugs and Kacey Musgraves, he spent an obsessive amount of time
alongside Alvvays filling in the cracks, roughing up the surfaces, and
mixing the results. This hybridized approach allowed the band to
harness each song's absolute core, then grace it with texture and
depth.

This is Rodrigo
Amarante's first solo record. It was made during an unexpected but very
welcome exile, in a land he wouldn't have predicted he'd linger for too
long; the west of the west. But the sense of distance and his newly
acquired refreshing anonymity kept him staying. Rodrigo found himself
leaning on that distance, projecting onto it, the space echoing back to
him with a new voice.
Cavalo means horse in Portuguese, a word also used for people who
channel spirits in service, something normal to Brazilians. Another
instance of an amalgam between vehicle and vehiculated, and writing
these songs felt like that, an attempt to merge these often conflicting
voices, the mind, and the gut. Rodrigo repeatedly found himself a
foreigner, an explorer, moving from city to city every three years as a
kid. He pretended to have the forbearance and courage he ended up
forging while secretly carrying the resentment of the imposed detours,
of the wait to return. When he finally arrived back in Rio no longer a
child and with an accent three times tampered he realized that his
hometown wasn't his, that he had invented it in light of what he saw
elsewhere, it's memory a dream of scents and light that didn't seem to
exist in space, maybe in time. He discovered himself a stranger, what
he had been since he first left and knew to be temporary, what he
realized was definitive. And it was a bitterness at first but it slowly
turned into something sweet, warm, he felt free and grateful, he had to
invent that too, cut the bushes to a new path. He departed again.

You may know Rodrigo
Amarante already. You may have heard "Tuyo," his theme tune to the
Netflix drama Narcos, or the Little Joy album, recorded with Fab
Moretti and Binki Shapiro, you might have noted his name among the
credits on songs by Gal Costa, Norah Jones and Gilberto Gil; or perhaps
you saw him play live with Brazilian samba big band Orquestra Imperial,
or with Rio rockers Los Hermanos; you really should have heard his
debut album, Cavalo, released in 2014. You may think you know Rodrigo
Amarante already, but Drama, his second solo album, is going to
introduce a whole new level of confusion to the mix.
Drama is purposefully caricatural, cinematic; "As biased as memory". It
flows as an arch, playfully deceiving, like a tale. The ominous opening
number gives you a hint that things might not be what they appear, and
clues are hiding in plain sight. "Projection, attachment, deception:
that is Drama.". The sunny upbeat start of "Mar", with a nearly
childish opening melody, echoes something less naïf: "The tide will
fetch what the ebb brings". The beat helps you move past. "Tango"
sounds like falling in love on the dance floor, warm and tropical, it
celebrates companionship, while perhaps pleading for it, yearning.
"Tara," meanwhile, feels like something Astrud Gilberto might have sung
at the height of bossa nova's global popularity, with the twist of the
big-band-era muted horns on the chorus, nearly self-deprecating, as if
mocking such idealized infatuation. Drama closes with the piano on "The
End." To live is to fall. After all the emotional upheavals the singer
has put his cast through, is this some kind of farewell to this mortal
coil? "Everything Furthers." says Amarante. "Whispering, you get louder
like that, people respond better to an invitation", and adds: "Staring
at the absurd while remaining kind, being open to the gifts of
confusion; that's why we create these tools that are stories and songs,
to help us see each other."

Aside from being one
of Anamanaguchi's most streamed songs, "Miku," featuring the vocaloid
pop star Hatsune Miku, is an anthem for a new type of musical icon, one
that doesn't need to be attached to a physical human body. Miku, which
was officially released in 2013, is a Vocaloid software voicebank
developed by Crypton Future Media. Her voice is based around Japanese
actress Saki Fujita and uses Yamaha Corporation's Vocaloid 2, Vocaloid
3, and Vocaloid 4 singing synthesizing technologies. Anamanaguchi wrote
"Miku" with the virtual musician and were the first band to perform
live alongside the Hatsune Miku hologram on the Miku Expo tour in 2016.
Since then, the song has been streamed tens of millions of times around
the globe and given way to several viral TikTok moments with 20K+
unique videos, signature dance moves, and millions of views.
Consistently engaging their audience in both the real world and the
virtual internet-sphere, Anamanaguchi has had TV performances on Late
Night with Jimmy Fallon and Adult Swim's Fish Center, multiple
appearances at Porter Robinson's Secret Sky Fest, and co-curated one of
the first major live stream events for indie musicians with the Nether
Meant Festival, which was featured in the New York Times and The
Washington Post. The band has also continued to stay true to a uniquely
cohesive collaborative spirit, sharing tracks with artists such as
HANA, Planet 1999, Flux Pavilion, Porter Robinson, Dorian Electra,
Pussy Riot, Village People, and POCHI. For 2022, Polyvinyl is proud to

Anamanaguchi will
release Summer Singles 2010/2020, a 2xLP set that unites two
fan-favorite collections of singles in a first-ever physical edition
and confirms the band's reputation among those in-the-know as one of
the most casually trailblazing and unexpectedly refined bands around.
Each eight-song set was originally recorded and released in the wake of
one of Anamanaguchi's most beloved albums. In 2010, they created the
cult-classic soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game,

Anamanaguchi is a
four-piece band from New York and Los Angeles made up of Peter Berkman,
Ary Warnaar, James DeVito, and Luke Silas. They program and perform
intensely emotional digital music, and also once sent a slice of pizza
into space.
Since forming in the mid-2000s, Anamanaguchi have been revered as
pioneers in the homemade, video game world of chiptune music.In 2010
they created the official soundtrack to the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
game and in 2013 they self-released Endless Fantasy on the strength of
an out-of-control Kickstarter campaign that brought in more than five
times their goal.
Recently, they've collaborated on a single with the computer-generated
Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku, and were the first independent artists
to perform alongside her hologram on tour.

bedroom recording project of songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. The

25th anniversary of Braid's iconic 1998 album, Frame & Canvas,
Polyvinyl and the band are thrilled to announce a new version of the
album, completely remixed, remastered, and repackaged for 2023.
Originally recorded and mixed in the span of just 5 days with producer
J. Robbins (The Promise Ring, Against Me!) at Inner Ear Studios in
Arlington, VA, Frame & Canvas would eventually become a
genre-defining staple and essential listening for indie/emo fans.
Since it's release, the album has received praise from outlets such as
Stereogum and Rolling Stone, who ranked it at #5 on their "Top 40 Emo
Albums of All Time" list. The band would go on to play hundreds of
shows across the globe in support of Frame & Canvas from 1998-99
before disbanding roughly a year after the album's release. Braid's
influence on the numerous bands and DIY scenes that arose in their wake
is vast and undeniable. Remixed by J. Robbins and remastered by Dan
Coutant (with vinyl mastering by Bob Weston).

personas," Diane Coffee, the versatile and ambitious pop project of
Shaun Fleming, returns with their fourth album, With People. The album
is both new territory for Diane Coffee, as well as a full-circle return
to their roots. To record the album, Fleming hit the studio with former
Foxygen bandmate and production wizard Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, The
Killers), fleshing out what would become With People in a series of
sessions that were quick and artistically productive, bringing new
nuances out of these ten songs as they worked together. The result is
an album that sounds warm and lived-in, like an old friend sharing
stories close to them while sitting on a moonlit porch. The jangly pomp
of "Forecast" addresses an on-and-off relationship and features vocals
from Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver, who proved the perfect match in
the studio. Diane Coffee has taken their theatrical live shows around
the world with the likes of The New Pornographers, of Montreal, The
Growlers, and more and has been featured in publications such as
Pitchfork, Billboard, Aquarium Drunkard and many others. Fleming has
also collaborated with Run The Jewels (the hip-hop duo fronted by
Killer Mike and El-P) on their track "Crown," which appears on the

Since 2006, The Dodos (singer and guitarist Meric Long and drummer
Logan Kroeber) have been careening, almost recklessly, towards some
perfect ideal of how The Dodos should sound. First formed with the
intention of creating a record that felt and sounded how the inside of
a guitar might, the band have spent the intervening years sprinting
towards that platonic goal. After widespread critical acclaim for their
sophomore effort Visiter in 2008, the band toured incessantly for the
next 10 years, playing countless venues all over the world including
several performances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Late
Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Now, The Dodos are back with their brand new album Grizzly Peak out
November 12th. Meditative and sometimes painful in it's emotional
excavation, over the course of ten anthemic, gorgeously-rendered
tracks, Grizzly Peak reveals itself as that place Long and Kroeber were
always desperately trying to find. Befitting a record that hits so
close to The Dodos' career-long goal, Grizzly Peak also serves as a
love letter to the fans who have devoted their hearts to Long and
Kroeber's music. "I feel a huge debt of gratitude to our fans or anyone
that paid attention enough to notice," Long says. "I really want to say
thank you; going back to our original intention and trying to perfect
this sound really seemed like the best way to express that gratitude.

Som, Bachelor, Routine). Her masterful production experience adds a
layer of sophistication to Farren's sound, creating a rich and
multi-dimensional sonic landscape that takes his music to new heights.
With Duterte's keen ear and meticulous attention to detail, the album
resonates with a level of clarity and depth that showcases Farren's
songwriting and vocal abilities in a whole new light. Chris Farren's
music has been praised in outlets such as MTV, Stereogum, and The
Atlantic, who describes his music as having "bright-eyed hooks, sparkly

Florist is the self-titled fourth full length record from upstate NY
based indie folk band, Florist. Florist is the follow up to 2019's
critically acclaimed Emily Alone, and is the strongest album of the
band's decade-long career; an immersive work that conveys the magic of
the earth and of family, and the whole of the band's heart. For all of
June of 2019, amid a hot and rainy summer, Emily Sprague (guitar,
synth, vocals), Jonnie Baker (guitar, synth, sampling, bass, saxophone,
vocals), Rick Spataro (bass, piano, synth, vocals) and Felix Walworth
(percussion, synth, guitar, vocals) convened in a rented house in the
Hudson Valley, to live and work together. It was the first time the
quartet recorded that way, and for that long. The result is 19 tracks
that feel like the culmination of a decade-long journey, their fourth
full-length album, but the first deserving of a self-titled
designation. "We called it Florist because this is not just my songs
with a backing band," Sprague explains. "It's a practice. It's a
collaboration. It's our one life. These are my best friends and the
music is the way that it is because of that."

GRACE, LAURA JANE - STAY ALIVE (BLUE)

planning on making a solo record this year. In fact, she was planning
on making a record with Against Me!, the band she's fronted for the
past 23 years. But clearly, nothing went according to plan this year.
"We came home from the Against Me! Tour we were on in March, and right
before we left, we had been in the studio working on songs, and I had
been working on them for months prior," says Grace. As she sat at home,
all of her tours canceled, and the members of Against Me! - as well as
her other band Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers - spread
across the country, she was left with a batch of songs and no band to
record them with. So, Grace got to work. She picked up the phone and
called Electrical Audio, the iconic studio in her adopted hometown of
Chicago, Illinois, to ask if she could make a record with famed
engineer Steve Albini. The goal was to go in and document these songs
exactly as she'd been playing them in her home, straight to analog
tape. When she hung up the phone, she had four days booked. The result
of the session at Electrical Audio is Stay Alive, a record that doesn't
just embody that title, it serves as the guiding principle behind it's
creations. Across the 14 songs that comprise Stay Alive, Grace takes
all her pent-up fears, anger, and anxiety and releases it, like an
olive branch to the weary listeners who are feeling those exact same
ways.

When creators
f<ck with how we experience time and space, great fictions emerge:
Clive Barker's Imajica, Andrei Tarkovsky's sci-fi classic Solaris, and
Godard's Alphaville. But what happens to artists when the flow of time
gets f^cked up IRL? When an hour stretches into eternity, and the
voices in your head begin to echo through empty rooms?
If you're Kevin Barnes, the creative visionary behind of Montreal,
Freewave Lucifer f<ck f^ck f>ck happens.
Isolation and uncertainty loomed throughout the genesis of the band's
latest studio album. "The experience of just trying to keep my head
above water and navigate through the last couple years played a huge
role in this record," says Barnes.
These expansive selections contrast markedly with the focused pop of
2020's UR FUN, which was crafted for visceral thrills and the concert
stage. As it was for countless musicians around the world, the
inability to tour eliminated one of the linchpins of Barnes' creative
process. "I didn't know if we'd ever tour again, so I didn't consider
that side of things." Denied social interaction and diverse
experiences, Barnes delved inward.
Barnes contemplated how time functions in music and experimented
accordingly. These new songs, dense with ideas but short on repetition,
feel epic in scope despite reasonable running times. Like the
staircases of M.C. Escher's Relativity, the discrete sections of
"Marijuana's A Working Woman" and "Blab Sabbath Lathe of Maiden"
crisscross and pivot, confounding the senses yet commanding attention.
The imagery and sentiments that bubble forth from Barnes' lyrical
wordplay prove equally disorienting. "Is it important to say black
chrome rodents?," asks Barnes on "Après The Déclassé." Phrases borne of
free association took on new meaning when introduced into a song. "It's
like collaborating with my subconscious in a way. It feels deeply
personal, even though I don't necessarily understand it at that
moment."
"Marijuana's A Working Woman'' juxtaposes oddball funk a la Zapp or
Rick James with nods to Alice Anne Baily's 19th century spiritualism.
"Modern Art Bewilders" zigzags between baroque psychedelic idyll and
synthpop tantrum, equal parts Sgt. Pepper's and Gary Numan. Other
influences woven throughout include realist painter Edward Hopper,
fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin, cinéaste Pedro Almodovar, and erotic
illustrator Toshio Saeki.
Barnes likens their compositional process to making collages from
seemingly unrelated source materials, combining them in provocative
ways to reveal new meanings. "I wasn't working with specific themes
that I wanted to try and stretch over a three-minute pop song. It was
sewing together a lot of fragmented thoughts," which ties in nicely to
the reewave' aspect of the album title's meaning. As Barnes explains,
"Freewave is my term for wild and intractable artistic expression.
Lucifer is the angel of enlightenment and elucidation. Fuck is
something we say when things are going really well, or really badly."
As for anything else going on behind the scenes during the genesis of
Freewave Lucifer f<ck f^ck f>ck, Barnes opts to preserve the
mystery. "Sometimes in the past, I felt it was important for people to
know certain things, so they could get into a specific headspace." Not
this time. "The last couple of years laid a heavy trip on everybody's
psyche. There are plenty of universal things here to identify with."

"I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people
used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals
Barnes. "I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the

of White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood. I became "Simulated Reality" paranoid
and I fell in LOVE. Well a lot more happened during the process of
writing and recording, but those are the two big ones. I also reached a
healthy point of self-forgiveness for my failed marriage and became
deeply educated in the lies of America the Great. Musically, I was very
inspired by the extended dance mixes that people used to make for pop
singles back in the 0s. It's so cool how a lot of the 80's hits had
these really intricate and interesting longer versions that wouldn't
get played on the radio and could only be heard in the clubs. I used
that template with these tracks, I wanted them all to feel like the
extended "club edit" of album tracks. I'm always searching for new
identities so this concept of the death of "Whiteness" appeals to me

OWEN - THE AVALANCHE
Owen is the solo
project of Chicago's Mike Kinsella. As a departure from over a decade
of work playing in a variety of bands - Cap'n Jazz, American Football,
and T/T/T to name a few - Owen became Kinsella's way of finally
exercising complete creative control over all aspects of a project,
including songwriting, recording, and overall artistic direction.
Owen's musical output as evolved from sparse acoustic offerings to
lush, string-filled arrangements. Kinsella often exposes family
relationships and personal experiences with lyrics that are at times
clever, witty, raw, and biting.

The third
full-length album from Boston-based trio Palehound, Black Friday is a
finespun exploration of all the forms that love can take: love between
friends, love for people no longer in your life, love in the face of
self-hate, love that endures through major life changes or through many
tiny catastrophes. With her thoughtful narrative voice, Palehound
singer/songwriter Ellen Kempner imbues each song on the album with a
radical sensitivity, an unchecked depth of feeling that ultimately
sparks a greater open-heartedness within the listener. Co-produced by
Kempner and Gabe Wax (Beirut, Soccer Mommy), Black Friday was recorded
at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California throughout late 2018.
The trio tracked most of the songs live, which introduced a new
vitality into the band's elegantly detailed sound. With Black Friday
building off the emotional complexity of its predecessor (2017's A
Place I'll Always Go), Palehound hope that the album might help others

After a 15-year
hiatus, Seattle, WA's David Bazan reformed his legendary project Pedro
the Lion with the release of Phoenix, it's first new album in over a
decade. Phoenix became an instant critical darling, with publications

SKA DREAM is a
complete re-recording of Jeff Rosenstock's critically-acclaimed 2020
record NO DREAM however this time around all the songs are ska songs
you're welcome. The very good idea to make this record came together
when, like many other bands throughout this pandemic that refused to
participate in super spreading events, we were trying to find a fun way
to make some music together to share with people. Otherwise we were
just spending our evenings texting the group chat in dread about the
collapsing world around us. Not the most fun band activity.
As with most things ska in my life, what started out as a fun goof with
friends eventually morphed into "Hey, what if we tried to make it good
though?" All of us have a pretty deep history playing and touring the
country in punk/ska bands. We all understand the stigma that comes
along with ska, we've all dealt with the pitfalls of it, and we've all
kept on truckin' regardless. If you are one of those people who loves
music as long as it isn't ska, that's cool, we see you. This record
isn't for you and you don't have to listen to it. Byeeee. Okay,

is real.

STRFKR's sound has
morphed over the years through variations of hyper catchy, danceable
pop, but on Ambient 1 - the band's first fully instrumental album - the
band has achieved something very different. For a little shy of an
hour, Ambient 1 drifts through softly glowing electronic instrumentals
that extract the synth core from the group's well established synth pop
sound. It's patient, playful, and calming music that travels through
passageways of chaos and anxiety on a journey towards healing.
Upon completing work on the lo-fi dreaminess of Future Past Life,
STRFKR's principal songwriter Josh Hodges found himself returning
repeatedly to albums by his favorite ambient artists and minimal
composers. This growing obsession with synthesis and the culture around
it also concurred with the daily darkness of the pandemic and some
personal disruptions. Without spending too much time thinking about
what it meant, Hodges began recording ambient experiments almost daily
as a way of processing these difficult emotions. Echoes of masters like
Harold Budd and Brian Eno can be heard in the angelic floating of "Work
Smoothly Lifetime Peace" while tracks like "Nexus" are stormy and
frenetic. In some ways, Ambient 1 is unlike anything STRFKR has created
before, but when completely absorbed, it makes sense why it's included
under the STRFKR banner. Even at his most drony and experimental,
Hodges can't escape his distinctive melodic approach. Ambient 1 strips
away the familiar and the expected, exposing Hodges' signature sonic
personality at a granular level.

Miracle Mile, propelled the Portland, OR dance-pop band into new sonic

Astoria, Oregon, Miracle Mile marked a defining moment for the band, as
primary songwriter Josh Hodges invited the other members to contribute
to the creative process. The resulting tracks, including standouts like
"While I'm Alive, " "Atlantis, " and "Golden Light, " showcased the
band's dynamic range and elevated their status as one of the most
exciting and innovative indie rock bands of the early 2010s. 10 years
later, Miracle Mile remains a fan favorite and a standout in STRFKR's
acclaimed discography. The album is being re-released on a new vinyl
color and includes a bonus flexi with the previously unreleased b-side

first for long-time label home Polyvinyl, the band built on what they
had accomplished with their self-titled debut album (2008) and the the
Jupiter EP (2009) to create an infectious combination of acoustic
instrumentation and electronic production.
Originally released on March 8, 2011, Reptilians has since become one
of the band's most intriguing and successful releases to date.
Featuring fan favorites "Bury Us Alive" and "Julius, " Reptilians was
written almost entirely by principal songwriter Joshua Hodges with help
from bandmates Shawn Glassford, Keil Corcoran, and long time friend
Randy Bemrose. The band mixed with Jacob Portrait in the famed Portland
studio The Odditorium. Lyrically, the album focuses primarily on death
and the end of the world, two subjects intertwined at the forefront of
Hodges' mind following the passing of his grandmother. To celebrate
it's 10-year anniversary, Reptilians will be released as a remastered
deluxe reissue (2xLP) with 4 bonus tracks and reimagined artwork by

Following the
release of his critically-lauded 2015 album All Are Saved,
songwriter/producer Fred Thomas entered a period of enormous
transition. He quit his job, got married and moved to Canada, all
between multiple tours that ran the spectrum from sold out opening
slots to sleeping in the car after empty gigs. At the end of yet
another tour he returned to Athens, Georgia, to again work with
producer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Mothers) on an album aiming to
encapsulate the nonstop changes that had sprung out of this phase of
his life. Naturally, this record is named Changer.

Swirling noise Brooklynites, Vivian Girls released their sophomore
album, Everything Goes Wrong, almost exactly one year after their
self-titled debut. Everything Goes Wrong is longer than the 22 mins
their debut clocked in at, with the band having taken their time and
recorded it in six days - rather than the three their debut took -
though many of the songs were still recorded in single takes.
Whilst Vivian Girls once again captured their raw, fun edge - as the
influence of '60s girl groups, The Ramones as well as surf and indie
pop, still ring true, Everything Goes Wrong is without a doubt a
darker, moodier album than its predecessor.

have toured the globe relentlessly, performing alongside artists such
as Deerhoof, Swans, Tune-Yards, and more at places like The Guggenheim,

Xiu Xiu has spent twenty years grappling with how to process, to be
empathetic towards, to disobey and to reorganize horror. Ignore Grief
is a record of halves. Angela Seo sings on half of the record. Jamie
Stewart sings on half of the record. Half of it is real. Half of it is
imaginary. The real songs attempt to turn the worst life has offered to
five people the band is connected with into some kind of desperate
shape that does something, anything, other than grind and brutalize
their hearts and memory within these stunningly horrendous experiences.
The imaginary songs are an expansion and abstract exploration of the
early rock and roll "Teen Tragedy" genre as jumping off point to
decontaminate the band's own overwhelming emotions in knowing and
living with what has happened to these five people.

Xiu Xiu makes
beautiful music for hard times. For nearly 20 years, the band has a
track record of crafting experimental music for moments when life's
harsh realities meet it's existential mysteries. On the latest album,
Jamie Stewart explores a recent revelation and is reminded of the power
of the band's music to surprise and connect. Listening to the songs on
OH NO, it is hard to feel truly alone. Instead, it is a reminder that
even when we're alone, we're alone together. OH NO, the group's newest
album, is an album of duets, with Stewart sharing the stage with an
array of guests who have made an impact on him personally and
musically. This is the first Xiu Xiu album where every song spotlights
Jamie Stewart and a collaborator. The album features artists across the
musical spectrum, including Sharon Van Etten, Circuit des Yeux's Haley
Fohr, Grouper's Liz Harris, Alice Bag, Chelsea Wolfe, Owen Pallet, and
Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr., all drift into Xiu Xiu's distinctive
soundworld. The album was born out of anguish and isolation, but exists
as it does because of a profound rediscovery of community and
friendship. It is the sound of finding one's place in the world after
the destructive powers of jealousy and mistrust make any map seemingly
unreadable.

long-distance project originally created between friends online, have
been self-producing their infectious blend of delicate pop tapestries
by way of home recordings since the release of their debut EP in 2014.
Composed of vocalist Christie Simpson, bassist / vocalist Josh Burgess,
guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Charlie Ryder, and drummer Olivia
Campion, Yumi Zouma have returned with Present Tense, the band's fourth
and most comprehensive studio album.
On Present Tense, Yumi Zouma bolster their sonic palette with an
arsenal of live drums, grand pianos, orchestral strings, and woodwinds,
to develop a sonic confidence that has grown with the release of 2017's
Willowbank and 2020's Truth or Consequences. Recorded in between Los
Angeles, London, Florence, New York and New Zealand, Present Tense
effortlessly glides between ballads like "Where The Light Used To Lay",
and bangers like "In The Eyes of Our Love" - arguably one of the most
immediate songs the band has ever written. On "Mona Lisa", the quartet
adds to their vast collection of undeniable melodies, with Simpson's
adlibs and harmonies shining bright atop a battery of percussion and
saxophones. Yumi Zouma's music has been featured in outlets such as

YUMI ZOUMA - TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES
Truth or
Consequences, Yumi Zouma's third album was produced by the band and
mixed by engineer Jake Aron (Solange, Grizzly Bear, Snail Mail).
Christie Simpson's voice gives weight to whispers of impressionistic
poetry, shielding hard truths with soft tones, while Burgess' vocals
reveal a rarified dimension of raw and lucid romanticism, with lead
single "Right Track / Wrong Man," in particular, exhibiting a Balearic
tempo and bass-heavy energy that belies it's underlying tension. The
first Yumi Zouma album to feature live drums, Truth or Consequences
radiates a brazen spirit of perseverance. "I love the duality in a lot
of disco songs, where they're incredibly upbeat, but there's real
frustration in the lyrics - sort of like, 'Nothing's going the way I
want, but I've got to deal with it any way I can,'" Simpson says.

YUMI ZOUMA - TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES - ALTERNATE VERSIONS
On March 13, 2020,
Yumi Zouma's highly anticipated album, Truth or Consequences, was
released. One day prior, the band played their first show of a fully
sold-out US tour, at Washington, DC's DC9. This was also the day the
Word Health Organization declared COVID-19 an official pandemic,
resulting in the band cancelling the entire tour and flying back to
Europe the next day - the day of their album's release.
"So after returning home and spending a few numb weeks adjusting to
this strange new way of life, April came, the reality set in, and we
quickly started to miss that feeling of exploring our new songs by
night, " the band says. "Writing new music around them, we took the
songs of Truth or Consequences and found ourselves a new way of
re-contextualising them safely, amidst the tragedy and fear going on in
the world outside our windows - and the Alternate Versions were born.
We encouraged each other to be bold, fearless, and to experiment like
we would on stage - but from the comfort of our own bedrooms, living
rooms and hallways. This new reimagining of Truth or Consequences is
the result of that process. Ten new arrangements that reflect our
feelings of optimism, helplessness, and a desire to keep exploring."
