A vinyl-singles-club featuring the cult-band HP Zinker. Hans Platzgumer's legendary grunge band was formed in 1989 in New York by two Austrians and established itself quickly in NYC's noise scene. Without pretense, they shared the stage with such bands as Sonic Youth, Ween, Helmet, Lemonheads and the Jon Spencer Blue Explosion. J Mascis drummed with them, Evan Dando sang with them and every month they played the stage of CBGB's. Two now-legendary US indie labels were founded just for them. Both Matador and Thrill Jockey's 001 catalogue numbers are HP Zinker records. In 1990 they signed with the London-based label Fire Records. They released five studio albums, countless singles & bootlegs and even received a Grammy nomination. In 1994, after five turbulent years of endless touring and drug excesses Zinker broke up in the middle of a European tour. To this day Hans Platzgumer has vehemently refused a reunion. Most Zinker releases are no longer available. Offering remedy to this deplorable state of affairs, comes Noise Appeal's limited edition subscription-only HP Zinker-Reissue-Box. Limited to 180 copies. When you listen to ASH MY LOVE, it's hard to believe that they are "just" a duo, their energy surprising the listener in every song. Andreas Dauböck (drums, guitar, vocals) and Ursula Winterauer (bass, vocals) are proof that the old Rock'n'Roll saying "less is more" is true to the core. After all, reduction and concentration are the most important virtues of every songwriter. By following these rules, the duo delivers a dirty counterdraft to the baroque congestion of today's digital auto-tune-pop. Consistently, both have passed on using any digital technology while producing "Money" - on all levels. From the effect machines to the recording on tape and the cut on vinyl records, everything was done with the help of analoge devices, which means: no possibility to cut on computers after the recordings are over. Due to this self-inflicted restriction, ASH MY LOVE was able to focus on the main thing: expressing their energy with the most direct sound ever.

The location was an old mill in the South of Styria, at resident producer Bernd Heinrauch, who worked with bands like Melvins, Chicks On Speed, Mark Deutrom, Binder & Krieglstein, Die Buben im Pelz or Hella Comet. Hans Platzgumer was playing a show in his hometown of Innsbruck, Austria - the one he left 30 years earlier to become a rockstar in the USA. That evening, while talking with bass player Chris Laine in the Hotel, he concluded this was a good place for such an ending. He had played nearly 2000 gigs all around the world, starting out as HP Zinker, 1987, in NYC, recording on the newly formed labels Matador and Thrill Jockey; playing out with luminaries with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Nirvana. But now Hans was almost 50 and a successful novelist. His last book, a bestseller. It's enough, he said. No more gigs. Maybe even stop recording. Suddenly the burden was gone. And into the spot of this profound illumination, stepped a figure. A musician from a fishing town in Norway (Kongsberg to be exact), Colin Holst, named after the dead-end street where, in obscurity, he wrote and recorded songs that reflected the breadth and beauty of his home with the skepticism of a hermit and the deep understanding of a half-century of Rock and Pop. So, as Colin Holst, Hans sat down at his piano, possessed. Long time collaborator Hannah MacKenna delivered words, Chris Laine channeled some Phil Spector. Half a year later the album had been written and recorded. The result is Convertible's sixth album, Holst Gate. An unusual collaboration between Vienna, Cambridge and LA, that nevertheless manages to inhabit the endless sub-polar expanse of the Norwegian Northlands. 'It was the perfect sort of night', as the album begins. A true triumph of the imagination.

Couscous is Andreas Ledl (clarinet, electric bass), Ralph Wakolbinger (drums, percussion), Martin Max Offenhuber (electronics, ghosttube, saz) and Thomas Binder-Reisinger (guitar, guzli). An Austrian group who have two earlier releases out on Pumpkin Records released in 2006 ('Couscous') and 2013 ('Trans'). Also they did much collaboration, with Damo Suzuki, Thollem McDonas (!) and many others. Boris Hauf, also from Austria, already participated on 'Trans' and is now again a natural partner to work with. Also Bob Donc guests on one track, playing zurna flute and field recordings on 'Lord Skeleton Dance'. What is Couscous about? They produce pompous, pulsating vehicles of massive sound. Heavy and loud music, departing from a rock and punk attitude. Some of the tracks move into sound research. Others are hammering, rhythm-driven entities. They serve their aggressive music raw on your plate. Either you like it, or not. They incorporate many different influences of (kraut) rock, improvisation, noise, sound collage, etc. Sometimes leading up to surprising twists and turns. No doubt they are an adventurous unit, seeking for the extreme.

The Ghost And The Machine plays rough and honest songs, intimate and untamed. Pristine elements collide and embrace each other. The metallic cutting-edge overtones of the resonator guitar meet the wooden shallow depth of the doublebass, carried by infectious drumming, and the dadaistic but yet pictorial vocals form sonic landscapes that pull you in. The result offers insights to an undistored sound - and soulportrait. There are no pictures in nature. A picture is peculiar to human beings, the ordinary content of the mind is abstract, amorphous and vague. Hella Comet are from Graz and have a female lead singer. That alone is supercool. In September 2016, they released their latest and probably best work "Locust Valley". This also is supercool. Many songs have catchy tunes, as they move from shoegaze-stuff and mesmerizing post-rock, and rather rely on enough intense melodies and the impressive voice of singer and bass-player Lea. No worries though, the music is still based on the powerful noise-grunge-rock-scaffolding.

Hella Comet are an Austrian band with influences that stretch from the obvious (shoegaze/90s alt rock) to the unexpected (mid-90s britpop). The shoegaze element is there from the off, it's all soaring guitars and Cocteau Twins-esque vocals floating in and out at points. However, Hella Comet's oeuvre is a lot more spiky than that suggests. They have some quite metallic elements in there, think Sonic Youth's Silver Rocket and you have an idea of how wild they can be... This is an excellent album, fans of Sonic Youth, Explosions In The Sky, Monarch! and even alt rockers will be all over this. It's that good. (NINEHERTZ.CO.UK)

Hailing from Ljubljana in Slovenia the duo of Pika Golob and Lucijan Prelog describe themselves as "Too hardcore for the electro kids, too electro for the hardcore kids." This may prove a bit of a quandary for some listeners but it makes little difference for me as 'Heaven Is An Empty Room' has proven a pretty damn good and formidable listen since it arrived at the tail end of the year. Apparently due to the political climate they decided to shelve original recordings and went back to the drawing board with this being the result. It certainly has an agitated feel no doubt spurred by discontent and the result has possibly made it all the harder and more abrasive for it.

Gracing the album are a whole host of kindred spirits, with improvisations from: Martin Philadelphy; Gregor Tischberger (the maybe men, Kreisky); Wolfram Leitner (the maybe men, M185) and Dave Schmidt (Sula Bassana, Electric Moon, Krautzone). Kenneth Winkler, of Kentrix fame, did the mastering. Armin List did the artwork.

In fact, you realize that nothing gets smoother because of it. The guitar shakes, electrifies and turns. The drums at times sound adventurous or down to earth, but always agil. The vocals are a disappointed craving and flabbergasted calling. Baguette moves forward, trying new structures and find new space for weird elements like decorated key boards, creaking bass and pipes. Carefully chosen, the sample has unexpected, but relaxing accents, but without falling back on old kneeslappers. The title, "Expensive Mouse" doesn't have to be understood to love it and its bizarre sound. If there's a topic that sets the album, it's the existential horrors that can be found in normal, everyday life, but a bit more catchy. You can try to make sense of our new, surreal world and Baguette is the perfect company for this trip.
