HOOVER III - FATHOM
"Following up their excellent album of space-sliced psych from last year, L.A.'s Hoover III return with a new single on French enclave Six Tonnes De Chair. Starting with a riff that scratches the ol' runes of Sabbath in the sand, the band proceeds to drive the track in a lighter direction, welding the heavy guitar chug to echo-dripped harmonies. The track doesn't just troll for grooves, though. As they arc into the second half the band stompboxes the warp drive and takes "Fathom" through a few layers of cosmos. Hoover III have been working a particularly potent strain of Space Rock in their first couple of releases, and if this new single is an indicator of where they're headed, then the next LP threatens to be one to watch out for. HOOVER III - HOOVER III
"While the "Guillotine" single gave some indication of what Hoover III had in store, it was hardly a proper warning for the Space Rock wormhole that unfolds on their eponymous debut. Along with members of Babylon, Numb.Er and Jesus Sons, the full band sonic assault is a beaut to behold. The band is huffing the fumes of Hawkwind and Amon Duul and likewise crawling through synth wires alongside Eloy and Sensations Fix. They digest a decade's worth of prog, Krautrock and psych then work it into a modern monster of Echoplexed infatuation. I use the word debut sparingly, though, because this has been an album working in the wings for years. Many of the songs are found in their infancy on Bert Hoover's lo-fi tape Destroya from 2015, but those versions sound like transmissions across a vast and unflinching galaxy once the entirely of Hoover III is let loose its atomic wail. There's lots to unpack in listening to Hoover III and it's a damn fun ride with some truly glowing moments. There's a lot of crossover when bands sidle up to Space Rock, but as psychedelic, progressive and propellant as this album is, it's never simply a prog, psych or Krautrock album. The correct combination of those particular forces gives the album that lift off of the terrestrial plain. Plenty reach out for the handhold on the genre, but it takes a bit of skill to land the grip. Bicycle Day begins as a conceptual performance during quarantine to engage my neighborhood, explore the utility of sound beyond its commodity. A mobile sound bath. An early version of the composition was broadcast from a speaker mounted to a bicycle and played throughout my neighborhood. The most important music encourages us to imagine a different world. What would happen if we removed that music from the underground and injected it into the public life? The second part of the composition explores private life and personal history. It was performed one evening with my collaborator since childhood, Aaron Diko (Gravite, Cindy). We grew up in a small town riding bikes as children, then eventually eating acid and riding bikes as teenagers. We wanted to capture the sense of wonder where we always dream to return. I think it's safe to say we are in a golden age of garage rock in Southern California, and Mind Meld carries on that tradition. Make no mistake: this self-titled album is a scorcher all the way through. The accelerator is down the entire time on this record, and the asphalt is left shattered in its wake. Liz Tooley's (formerly of Endless Bummer) drumming craters any stage she happens to be on, and Erik Lake's (of Jesus Sons) bass playing enters into seamless dialogue with Bert Hoover's (also of Jesus Sons) guitar playing, creating a dynamic that openly pushes to transcend the psych-garage genre. Labeling Mind Meld as a psych or garage band does a disservice to what is taking place here - it'd be lazy to assert that it sounds like this or that band, regardless of the service it might do to the reader of this piece. Mind Meld has a character that defies easy description, but is nonetheless felt on each of these songs. There is a yearning on this record that drives , no, more like powers the sheer locomotive force of this record. The need to be heard and felt is apparent in the playing here, which coalesces into a fury that expresses the sheer joy of the process of creation. REARRANGED FACE - A REFACED RANGER
Rearranged Face provides the landscape for just that: a rearranging of ideas regarding music and its potential. This album is distinct in its approach to creating and challenging the aesthetic models we come to from when engaging music. Mark Lee and company have touched a nerve - no, they have burrowed into the nerve and set up a home. This album is a hurricane of sound and concepts, forming a passionate delivery system of art rock with undertones of (if you dig deep enough) pop and post-punk notions. The listener is choked with a whirl and torment of sound, creating a dissonant palette that is unlike anything else how there these days. What you're listening to here is the intersection of confusion and confidence, this band knows how to create music that could soundtrack in dystopian dream. Coloring and augmenting the collapse through a vortex of charm and playfulness that points to the absurdity of the world (and art worlds!) in which we find ourselves. Had Duchamp recorded an album, it'd probably be this particular one. The anti-aesthetic employed here is so effective that one can't help but sit and listen to this piece over and over again. It's so unsettling it feels like home; so acute that it can't be ignored; so insistent that it pulses with awareness and consideration. REARRANGED FACE - ARCANE FREE DRAG
Art-punk band Rearranged Face's sound is tighter and more polished than before on their new full-length release Arcane Free Drag. While these songs are more accessible than 2017's A Refaced Ranger, they stay true to the band's off-the-wall sensibilities - the band's bonkers brand of synth-driven post-punk is still the furthest thing from boring. Arcane Free Drag sounds the way it feels when you've had one too many cups of coffee: jumpy and nervous, but inspired and exciting, too. From first listen, these songs are hard to forget. The riff on opening track "120 Dogs" worms its way into your skull while stand-out "Picture in Duke" is a dissonant gem reminiscent of early 00's post-punk. Even when their sound veers towards straightforward punk like "Shadows," that spasmodic synth is still front and center. Many of the tunes, especially "Salt," seem to channel early Talking Heads with frenetic guitar and David Byrne-style cadence. Even so, the band defies comparison and categorization. Wild Wing has undergone a peculiar mutation in the last three years. Their first self-titled EP spilled into their second, Another Victory for the Forces of Darkness, both heavy on the combative wit and long instrumental rambling. Songs like "O, Cuntry!" and "Wild Wing Nightmare" are tapped into an unruly swamp sound not felt since the days of Creedence (less finger-pointing protest songs; more working class bar brawl songs). I'm straining to name another hillbilly punk act, but I honestly can't think of one. Wild Wing pulls off a surfer redneck jive like no one else; cheeky like The Butthole Surfers but not as abstract.
