Elephant Rifle's freak flag-waving brand of Western noise rock falls in

HEX MACHINE - FIXATOR
Since the release of
their debut album Omen Mas, Hex Machine has soldiered on in feigned
attempts to contain its angular raging bull on acid approach to the
stage with the likes of the Jesus Lizard, Clutch, Harvey Milk,
Converge, and Lamb of God. Scenes at dives and dark caves all across
the US, as well as appearances at various putrid fests such as SXSW,
created a type of bangover likening the band to a state of mind akin to
the rock freak magnet that is now considered classic hardcore
Touch&Go / Amphetamine Reptile guitar strangling mind-spelunking
rawk. After finally being committed to a secluded studio deep in the
Northern California woods, these newly frankensteined tracks were
confined to tape by agent Tim Green (Melvins, Earthless). Off in the
distance, their signal soon showed up on radar at an Amrep army
officer's club, commonly referred to as "Grumpy's", by recruiters known
as Learning Curve Records. For the last decade, this outfit has been
known for picking up the slack while Amrep retards their missions, yet
operating out the same barracks.

Amplification moves
air and gestures to the celestial. A splitter van parks in a service
station. The afterglow of the stage. The weight of a bass cab up a
steep flight of metal stairs. Hey Colossus are no strangers to the
dualities of life as a loud rock band. But more importantly, they know
how to channel both facets into records that transcend all limitations
in a blinding volley of incandescence. Dances/Curses - their lucky
thirteenth record - is the work of six musicians at the peak of their
considerable powers of intuition and inspiration.
Constant motion is also something Hey Colossus know a little about, now
into their eighteenth year as a band in a never-ending search for new
trouble and new epiphanies. When this iteration of the band - which
came together around the making of their last release, 2019's 'Four
Bibles', geographically spread between Somerset, Watford, London,
Nottingham and Sheffield - first began work the chemistry apparently
took care of itself, with their meetings at weekend rehearsals seeing
them undergo a process less like jamming and more like a particularly
intensive form of instant composition. Whatever sparks were
spontaneously flying in these initial sessions, they gave rise to
enough material to make Dances/Curses a double record, running the
gamut from the rhythmically-driven, infectiously melodic songcraft of
'Donkey Jaw' and 'Medal' via the slow-burning atmospherics of 'U
Cowboy' to the mightily motorik-driven 15 minute travelogue that is 'A
Trembling Rose', which takes in a plethora of unified headspaces in
richly cinematic style. Longterm Hey Colossus fan Mark Lanegan makes an
appearance amidst the languid and sun-soaked denouement of 'The
Mirror', the existential gravitas of his tones entirely at home in

INTERCOURSE - HALO CASTRATION INSTITUTE
In a nod to the iconic line from the film Stand By Me, the album's
opening track and first single, "Where Losers Go to Die," kicks off
with frontman Tarek Ahmed bellowing: "Hey man, want to see a dead
body?" What follows is an eerie The Jesus Lizard-esque dirge that slips
into a Neanderthal breakdown, serving as a perfect introduction to
Intercourse's world. Choosing brutish simplicity as their weapon of
choice, the band prowls the shadowy fringes of noise rock and hardcore,
a zone also occupied by the likes of Chat Pile and Couch Slut. "Were
too weird for a lot of the hardcore scene and too aggro for the weird
scene," states Ahmed. The band's sole founding member, Ahmed wields a
singular vocal style that smashes the line between the sublime and the
ridiculous. With a strangulated roar, almost cartoonish in its unhinged
glory, Ahmed spouts painfully direct, often poetic, lyrics about the
pain of existence. His songs reference a litany of characters from his
own past, growing up in the backwoods of Connecticut as an Egyptian kid
in the post-9/11 years, and from the annals of true crime - hitman
Richard "The Iceman" Kulkinski, bulldozer enthusiast Marvin Heemeyer,
and Bjork stalker Ricardo Lopez, to name a few. A 2021 write-up from No
Echo hailed Ahmed as "a brilliant wordsmith I aspire to someday match
in skill."

finish, guitarist/vocalist Sam Frederick's angular riffing is

In the psychic wastelands of the 21st century, one particular sonic
force looms large. Transcendental like the malignant force that fuels
the zombie movies of lore, Part Chimp have made it their business to
shake speaker-stacks, fry brains and induce jouissance and tinnitus
alike across the UK. Yet whilst their legendary status as primal
paragons of the riff has been largely a fixture of the vinyl-stacks and
battered amps of the underground, Drool - their fifth and perhaps
finest transmission thus far - has other ideas.
Drool is everything that makes Part Chimp the most intimidating primate
fit to lay waste to a city near you. It's a fearsome testimony to a
band with a skewed melodic skill to match their mighty potency. Echoes
of their forebears - the ornery prehistoric lurch of Melvins and the
droogy ur-clang of Sonic Youth among them - can be distantly discerned,
Yet they're now drowned out by an individual assault as pulverising as
invigorating, nihilistic yet life-affirming. This band will demolish
your house, but you'll cheerfully thank them for it afterwards. At the
heart of the zombified stomp of 'Back From The Dead', the narcotised
drawl of 'Drool', and the krautpunk rocket of 'Up, With Notes' is not
just a gratuitous celebration of fuzz and volume for their own sake but
the alchemy that can be achieved with simple ingredients and sleight of
hand. Guitarist and vocalist Tim Cedar sums up the raison d'être of
Chimp as "the stupid amounts of fun you can have with very loud amps,
stupid tunings, weird pedals and weird people. That inspires us"
With recording taking place between various studio sojourns across
London, New York and Somerset, and the longtime trio of Tim Cedar, Iain
Hinchcliffe and Jon Hamilton joined by appearances from both longtime
four-stringer Joe McLaughlin and new recruit Robin Freeman, the
emphasis here is on capturing the raw energy of the band in its purest

Founded by three
veterans of Philly's punk and hardcore scenes, whose current and recent
bands include Creepoid, Fight Amp, and Ecstatic Vision - and all three
of whom work shifts at the city's preeminent rock dive, Kung Fu Necktie
- Plaque Marks pound out the rawest, most caustic music any of these
musicians has ever made. The band is the self-proclaimed "stain on the
smile of the Philadelphia music scene."
Plaque Marks credit Texas legends Rusted Shut and Cherubs for
inspiration, as well as the early works of contemporaries Pissed Jeans-
and while some of the members' other work, particularly Fight Amp

REPTOID - WORSHIP FALSE GODS
Reptoid is a
one-man, industrial-influenced noise-rock band from Oakland,
California. The sole member, Jordan Sobolew, surrounds himself with an
army of drums, homemade fuzz pedals, noise devices and a sampler, to
produce spastic, hypnotizing rhythms, and painfully amplified sounds
drenched in effects through an oversized pedal-board full of odd
implements. Vocals are delivered through a mic strapped directly to the
face by a modified respirator mask. Everything is performed live and
without the aid of a computer or backing tracks. "The intent is to
convey frenetic, third eye-opening energy," says Sobolew.
Debut full-length Worship False Gods is dazzling. Even those listeners
bearing no knowledge of the music's origin will be wowed by Reptoid -
an onslaught of churning noise-rock, punctuated by an array of glitchy
sounds and propelled by Sobolew's drumming which ranks somewhere
between the frantic assaults of Brian Chippendale and the almighty
hammering of Dale Crover. Had Worship False Gods been bashed out by a
full band, it would be regarded as a devastating slab of experimental
rock, in league with Daughters, The Locust or Lightning Bolt. But the
kicker is that this is a solo project, composed and performed solely by
Sobolew, using a small mountain of highly customized gear. For one
person to execute these songs, live, in real time, without any sort of
accompaniment or enhancement, is a technical marvel. As an awe-struck
Invisible Oranges proclaimed in 2017: "Reptoid encases
feral-yet-precise drumming with noxious clouds of noise and maniacal
synth. And it's just one guy." Limited to 500 copies.

Four years since the
release of its sophomore effort, Songs for the Sally Beauty Pavilion,
Something Is Waiting returns with a brand new full-length. Absolutely
is an unapologetic tour-de-force that sees this Chicago band dig its
heels even deeper into the strange patch of dirt it owns - "the
shrieky, sleazy, crust-glam you crave," as one review from Kerrang!
describes it.
Sounding unlike any other band of today, Something Is Waiting exudes
all the swagger of the latter-day hair metal saints and up-and-coming
groove-metal goons who filled Riki Rachtman's cue cards in the earliest
days of the '90s, yet seethes with enough vitriol to delight the
nihilistic noise rock hordes who gathered to witness its set at this
year's Caterwaul Festival.
Formerly a five-piece, stripped down to a trio now, Something Is
Waiting's three core members have stuck to their guns and mastered
their craft. Gobbo and the boys' dedication to the likes of Pantera,
White Zombie, and the early works of Ross Robinson, coupled with their
enduring love of the most caustic cuts from the AmRep catalog, has paid
off. Six years deep, the band is in a league of its own, the undisputed
king of its own style of hard-charging "nu roll," which no one else
within noise rock - or within any other strain of heavy music currently
deemed "cool" - is even doing.
But make no mistake: while the musical elements might seem simple and
traceable, Something Is Waiting is not. Using a palette of sounds
inspired by their aforementioned heroes, the band builds unusual songs
that are as perplexing as they are headbangable. And here is where it
gets even more interesting: Gobbo is a wildly creative lyricist who
conjures surreal scenarios with the euphoric wordplay of a Beat poet.
His critiques, pointed at an array of targets, from the music industry
to society at large, are thick with sarcasm and pop culture references.
On "House of Style," he quotes a lyric from The Bangles' "Walk Like an
Egyptian." On "In the Pool (Wetworld)," which features guest vocals by
Dead to Fall's Jon Hunt, he spits the gem, "drunk like Sia with my hair
in my face." The album's closer, "Poster Boys," is written from the
point of view of a Hit Parader centerfold, hanging on a teenage girls
wall. Indeed, Absolutely is the sound of a band being
unapologetically... them. It is the sound of a band that has doubled
down and committed to its own, odd vision. It is the sound of a new

TUNNEL, THE - SHUDDER (COLOR)
With stabs of
growling bass, a discordant peal of guitar, and the robotic thump of a
floor tom, Shudder's title track launches into being, setting the stage
for frontman Jeff Wagner's unmistakable voice - a sinister croon, caked
in distortion and sleaze. Bearing traces of such pompadoured antiheroes
as Nick Cave, Wagner's dark and theatrical twang is offset by the
band's mechanized throb. These two energies - the sultry noir and the
cold machinery - grind against each other and create the sparks that
are The Tunnel. The glorious clash of styles can be depicted in many
ways. A 2020 review from White Light/White Heat saw it as a mix of
"seedy primeval swampy muddy groove" and "industrialized noise racket"
and dropped a flurry of names, from The Birthday Party to Big Black.
Shudder is the prolific San Francisco band's seventh full-length album,
amidst various other EPs, splits, and tracks on comps. Recorded, mixed,
and mastered by the band itself, Shudder is an absolutely perfect
expression of its makers' well-honed vision. Over ten tracks, the band
- Wagner, flanked by bassist Sam Black and drummer Michael Jacobs -
slinks and slithers from the shotgun shack to the dark alley and back
again, evoking a fantasy where macabre backwoods gloom unites with
dystopian urban decay. While some of the inspiration flows from the
songs and films of the aforementioned artists, the band's hometown
provided the rest.

VINCAS - PHANTASMA
From Athens,
Georgia, Vincas conjure a uniquely Southern brand of death-rock - a
thrilling, chilling, Deep South cemetery stomp. The band take cues from
the assorted works of H.P. Lovecraft, Howlin' Wolf, and David Lynch,
whilst bashing out some of the most macabre post-punk this side of The
Birthday Party.
A mix of live and programmed drums propel twangy guitars, distorted
bass, and frontman Chris McNeal's nefarious baritone, through ten
gleefully dark, cinematic anthems. With song titles like "Until It
Rains Red," "The Witch," and "Bury Me Upside Down," Vincas' drama is
moonlit, morbid, and lots of fun. The Nick Cave influence is strong,
but the setting is a haunted shack on the banks of a Georgia swamp.
McNeal (who also rocks as a member of the renowned Maserati) states:
"Pretty much every song on the record is about an unimaginable evil
destroying or enhancing a person's life. Just a random horrible or
liberating experience." Vampiric lust oozes through lyrics such as
"I've been here all along / Your body is my home / I'll build a bed out
of your bones" (from "The Witch") and "I'll crawl through your window /
I'll scratch, let me in / Say the words and let me in" (from "Let Me
In").
Phantasma is Vincas' third full-length, following 2013's Blood Bleeds
and 2016's Deep in the Well. The album was engineered by Mike Albanese
(Maserati), and mixed and mastered Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk). Newest
Vincas member Gene Woolfolk, who joined during the recording of
Phantasma, is a member of noise-rock supergroup Plaque Marks.

YOUNG JAMES LONG - OROGENY
It is with great
fanfare that we proudly announce the return of the esteemed
improvisational chainsaw blues trio Young James Long.
Young James Long formed in Dallas in 2003 with a weekly residency at a
local (and appropriately named) dive bar called Muddy Waters. PW Long
(guitar, vocals) and Kirkland James (guitar) had known each other
socially since the 90s when Long was fronting Quarterstick Records
Mule, and James was playing with Tenderloin. Long would go onto make a
series of incredible solo records under his own name and that of PW
Longs Reelfoot and James would play with Alejandro Escovedo (among many
others) before their paths finally crossed again. They recruited Taylor
Young (Hi-Fi Drowning, Young Heart Attack, The Polyphonic Spree) on
drums and a raw, blues-punk-rock-and-roll band emerged fully formed,
songs flying out of them with enthusiasm and ease. Orogeny is released
on October 6th 2023 via Wrong Speed Records (UK/EU) and Learning Curve
