Over 50 different musicians perform on the album, including the Portland Flash Choir, a gospel choir, Portland Cello Project, string quartets, as well as horn sections. This is on top of the band members who played over 30 different instruments themselves. These performances were masterfully orchestrated by Chris Funk and then mixed with care by the esteemed Tucker Martine. Resulting in an album that is not only lush and full, but also immediate, vital and dark.

Here it is! 1/2 Studio, 1/2 Live, all beast. After coming home fired up from their 2017 tours, Eyelids headed into various studios in Portland to finish up work on a new batch of songs they had been working on. They ended up with a perfect combination of the lilting, powerful hooks of their recent Peter Buck produced album "or" alongside the spookier, more meditative moments from their debut album 854. Oh and they added in a fiery rendition of The Gun Club's "Sex Beat" (with Scott and Peter of R. E. M. throwing down alongside them) just to hammer the point home. With it's rolling and intricate jangle Eyelids (like XTC, R. E. M. and The Byrds-their three biggest comparisons from the press) make their three distinct personalities/guitars become an amazingly powerful whole. Sonically there is a new layer to their sound. Guitars flutter and dive; strings and harmonies collide. From the beautiful opening chords of "Maybe More" to the screams of their cover of Gun Club's "Sex Beat" this is their most diverse offering yet. The tipped over folk of "Cannon & Dee" with it's lush harmonies and the harsh melancholy of "Masterpiece (Wanna Die)" make for an emotional ride. Flip the record over and you'll discover a newly remastered live Eyelids performance from last year at the legendary Monty Hall (which is run by the equally legendary station WFMU). The show was a mess of great songs, crazed banter, special guests and features highlights from many of the last nine releases the band has put forth into the world over the last four years.

Or marks the first time of having an outside producer and having Peter Buck in that role proved a steady presence, along with his encyclopedic rock know-how. "Peter brings a certain calm to the studio at an Eyelids session," Moen says. "I think he helps us get the best out of ourselves in a timely way, as he doesn't like belaboring a point. The long tail of Krautrock in all its droney, repetitive permutations continues to be felt in modern music, some 40+ years after artists like Faust, Kraftwerk, and Can arrived in the world. It's what you do with those influences that matters. And no one is doing more with the raw materials of this sound than Motrik. This quartet from Portland, Oregon - bassist/vocalist Erik Goltz, drummer Lee Ritter, guitarist Cord Amato and synth wizard Dave Fulton - connect up with the sounds of the past like an M.C. Escher mural: it follows the same patterns but takes them in much different directions with much more colorful and mind-altering results.

On her fifth full-length LP, How A Fantasy Will Kill Us All, songwriter Corrina Repp charts a path through the unknown. Fueled by a desire to start over and make a clean break with Portland, where she'd lived for 21 years, and where she released a string of albums on HUSH and Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label, played with her band Tu Fawning, and appeared semi-regularly on the parody comedy series Portlandia, Repp headed across the country. The songs on the new record came together over two fitful, unrooted years that found her working at the Sou'Wester motor lodge on the coast of Washington, staying at the Saint-Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt convent in Northern France where she dedicated herself to playing music, writing songs in a sublet in Los Angeles, and finally, in Louisville, Kentucky, where she holed up with Danny Seim of Menomena to record How A Fantasy Will Kill Us All. Built on foundational loops and drones, Repp's songs mingle solid, folk-tinged melodies with distortion, kaleidoscopic pop, and disjointed, cobbled together beats. Sometimes she sounds like a gospel singer, sometimes she sounds like a slightly malfunctioning tape deck, but always, she sounds free.

The idea to make a soundtrack album for the book arose soon after the final draft of "The Animals" had been completed. Novelist Christian Kiefer produced a lengthy visual "score" for the book - mostly a collection of texts and images that he hoped would inspire the musicians involved, (a score available as a digital download with this release). This material was uploaded to the cloud along with sound samples, instructions, and ideas. He then invited various musicians to look through those materials. Tracks were flown into and out of the cloud and Kiefer set to assembling the project in his home studio in Northern California, recording more material, overdubbing, mixing, and mastering. Kiefer's projects often include collaborators, some of them quite well known. He has worked with Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, Wilco's Nels Cline, The Band's Garth Hudson, Smog's Bill Callahan, Califone, Rosie Thomas, Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon, Will Johnson of Centro-Matic, and many others. After coming home fired up from their 2017 tours, Eyelids headed into various studios in Portland to finish up work on a new batch of songs they had been working on. They ended up with a perfect combination of the lilting, powerful hooks of their recent Peter Buck produced album "or" alongside the spookier, more meditative moments from their debut album 854. Oh and they added in a fiery rendition of The Gun Club's "Sex Beat" (with Scott and Peter of R. E. M. throwing down alongside them) just to hammer the point home. With it's rolling and intricate jangle Eyelids (like XTC, R. E. M. and The Byrds-their three biggest comparisons from the press) make their three distinct personalities/guitars become an amazingly powerful whole. Sonically there is a new layer to their sound. Guitars flutter and dive; strings and harmonies collide. From the beautiful opening chords of "Maybe More" to the screams of their cover of Gun Club's "Sex Beat" this is their most diverse offering yet. The tipped over folk of "Cannon & Dee" with it's lush harmonies and the harsh melancholy of "Masterpiece (Wanna Die)" make for an emotional ride. Flip the record over and you'll discover a newly remastered live Eyelids performance from last year at the legendary Monty Hall (which is run by the equally legendary station WFMU). The show was a mess of great songs, crazed banter, special guests and features highlights from many of the last nine releases the band has put forth into the world over the last four years. 		CD

Portland, Oregon-based band. Eyelids existed long before the actual band came to be. Friends for over two decades, principal songwriters John Moen and Chris Slusarenko had long desired to get together to write songs, "sweet melodies" paired with "bummer vibes," which would fuse Big Star's jangle to XTC's melodicism, connecting the dots between the dream pop sounds of the '80s Paisley Underground to the homespun post-punk of the legendary Flying Nun label. With Or, the band's second full-length LP, Eyelids have created their most emotional record yet. Produced by Peter Buck of R. E. M. and mixed by Thom Monahan (Peter, Bjorn and John, Devandra Banhart, Fruit Bats), Or is liberally sprinkled with the hooks, melodies, and charming wordplay that make a certain kind of rock 'n' roll fan fall madly in love with an LP. Or marks the first time of having an outside producer and having Peter Buck in that role proved a steady presence, along with his encyclopedic rock know-how. "Peter brings a certain calm to the studio at an Eyelids session," Moen says. "I think he helps us get the best out of ourselves in a timely way, as he doesn't like belaboring a point. " Joined by guests Jay Gonzales (Drive-By Truckers), Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven) and Buck himself, the record demonstrates what happens when a group of old friends get into a room and truly collaborate. Hook & Anchor is a story of lost songs finding a home. After a busy five years of touring with Portland-based band Blind Pilot, Kati Claborn was sitting on a steadily growing pile of tunes. The bands' self-titled debut, released July 22, 2014 via Jealous Butcher and Woodphone Records, is adventurous yet accessible, stitched together by a reverence for the evolution of traditional American music and the strong individual voices that comprise the band. Although generalizations don't come easy, the album exists somewhere at the confluence of country, folk, and rock and roll, with every track pushing definitions across a new border. 		CD

From "Hand Grenade" to "Temporary Insurance", Team Dresch's highly emotive, tightly-wound and put simply, very loud punk rock was an unprecedented type of vehicle for which to deliver the bands profoundly prescient messages and identity, one that resonates deeply with our current times. That this music was made approximately a quarter-century in the past is an astonishing thing to wrap ones head around. That it went somewhat overlooked in it's day is not terribly surprising, given that it was probably a little too ahead of it's time, so to speak. Throughout the 1994 - 2000 timeline traversed by this compilation, Team Dresch created a song cycle that plays through with the intensity and influence of both Personal Best and Captain My Captain.
