Alessandra
Celletti's new album 'Above the Sky' consists of nine original piano
pieces and three by composers who have been an ongoing influence on her
work (George Gurdjieff, Lawrence Ball and Alan Hovhaness). The CD is
packaged in a very beautiful digipak with ten color paintings on the
panels.
The album is released coming off of a very successful tour of eleven
outdoor performances in small towns throughout Italy where a truck with
a baby grand piano on the back was driven to each locale that converted
into a stage.

WORK IN PROGRESS The sound of a drill superimposed on the sound of my
piano: this was a risk that I had to run when I decided to record my
new album not in a recording studio, but in my house. Fortunately, the
problem has been cleverly solved by using a simple and polite request
for a little silence, just for the three days that I have scheduled for
recording. And my neighbors, including the new family that is
renovating the house, have done their utmost to guarantee me calm
without too much background noise. Nasino, my beloved cat, was the
guest of Bruno and Lida, who live in the apartment opposite to mine. I
hope you will forgive me for not including his little voice among the
tools provided.
This new album as always affects my relationship with the flight and
the starry sky. Maybe my "extreme" album more because my interest is
going right to the essence of the sound, the music as pure color and
tonal experimentation. For this reason I have chosen precious fellow
travelers, who, like me, intend music research as an exploration of
sound, and I wanted to juxtapose to my compositions authors who I feel
similar in the way of intending music as a tool to give voice to the
invisible. I threw the coins to form 3 hexagrams. They formed the
"Sky", the "Crescent Moon" and the "Vision" ... and maybe the album
will start from these notes. I tried to sing the stars, the emergence
of a lily in the fog ... following the sound to dissolve the image of a
dream. Next to my piano you will hear the colors of an accordion, a
bass flute, the poignant notes of a saxophone, the magic of a Theremin,
the drum beats.
I'm not anticipating the names of the musicians, but some of you who
know me better, may have already guessed. I decided to record in my
house and with my piano because for a work of this kind I needed a
total familiarity with the sounds and colors that I wanted to find. And
then my house, small and chaotic, is my launching pad towards the
infinite. I could tell you so many little incidents that have occurred
in these days of recording, but I can summarize them in the sense of
harmony that I have experienced ... For now I'll stop here, but there
are other things to discover ... gradually towards the spring..

Italian classical pianist/composer AND pop singer who previously
released albums ranging from covers of Philip Glass (Metamorphosis")
and Scott Joplin's ragtimes ("Black Baby", 2001) to an album on LTD
(2008) returns with an album of piano sonatas by Baldassarre Galuppi,
the mid-1700s Italian opera composer. This is Alessandra's first US
release, and she will be playing her first US date in May at the
Italian Cultural Ministry in NYC.
"An album born from a strange bet whereby Alessandra Celletti returns
to classical music after her celebrated interpretations of Satie,
Glass, Ravel and Debussy. The Transparency label, famous as recent
distributor of Sun Ra's unpublished works, commissioned Alessandra to
record the entirety of Karlheinz Stockhausen's work for pianoforte, the
famous Klavierstücke. It wasn't difficult for the avant-garde American
label to be convinced instead of this project proposed by the Roman
pianist, apparently the polar opposite from the initial idea however
via this little known composer, Baldassarre Galuppi (1706-1785),
Celletti has once again produced an album that appears to stop time for
the listener, suspending him/her in a universe where grace and the
purest of intentions are the important elements. The music of Galuppi,
known for the severity of its score, comes resuscitated by Alessandra
in a game of emotional change-ups which already made her Satie the best
on record. Originally the compositions by Galuppi were daring for their
time and decidedly avant-garde even for the flourishing ambiance of
eighteenth-century Venice, rendering the composer an outsider. In this
new delicate and intriguing masterwork, personality and truly poetic
charm will certainly beguile any fan of new music who doesn't bother
him/herself with labels and genres. File under: new music from the 18th

CHROME - HALF MACHINE FROM THE SUN: LOST TRACKS '79-80
Tracks recorded by
HELIOS CREED and DAMON EDGE in '79 and '80, during the "Half Machine
Lip Moves" and "Third From The Sun" period, but never released. About
this era Helios recently wrote:
"We were into Iggy and the Stooges, and Punk shows started happening at
the Mabuhay Gardens in 1976 which was right there in North Beach too,
at the end of the Broadway strip. It was the most fun era of my life.
The Punk scene had an incredible energy and fire. Then the Sex Pistols
came out with Never Mind the Bullocks in 1977 and we released Chrome's
second album Alien Soundtracks the same year and the whole Punk thing
exploded. Next we released Half Machine Lip Moves in 1979 and it and
Alien Soundtracks, took over in the Punk world. Our record covers
filled the windows of record stores and I was in awe. We weren't really
a traditional Punk band. Nobody else sounded like us. We were more of a
Psychedelic band, but a Punk version of Psychedelia, Acid-Punk. But I
was influenced by the Punk scene, because the music was experimental
and free, but still hard and solid. Punk's guitar was fucked up and
without rules. So it was a great scene to keep developing my sound and
my approach to guitar. Damon and I were both into expanding the
possibilities. We fed off of each other in our experimentation and as
we created we'd both like the same things. There was this thing that
Damon and I called 'the Chill Factor' where if its really good you get
goose bumps, and we used to get the 'Chill Factor' at the same time. We
shared concepts about how to approach music and we pushed the limits
and that is how I guess we became known as proto-Industrial, because we
expanded the possibilities of what music at the time could sound like
and people were influenced from there. Damon's and my meeting had
become a catalyst for the birth of a whole new sound."

Cobraside is proud
to be releasing Magick Spells, the debut album from Gateway Drugs, a
Los Angeles-based rock band along the lines of The Birthday Party, The
Jesus and Mary Chain and Sonic Youth. The members are Liv Niles (lead
vocals, bass, guitar), Noa Niles (lead vocals, guitar, keys), Gab Niles
(lead vocals, drums, guitar, bass), and Blues Williams (vocals, bass,
guitars). They've been playing packed venues around L.A. and their
shows have been described as "A mind-blowing, heart-altering mix of
sex, chaos, bad thoughts, young dreams, and perfect pop." The rest of
the U.S. will get to see what all the buzz is about (and why
buzzbands.la chose them as one of the bands to watch in 2015) starting
in March when they will be opening for Swervedriver for 22 shows
including a SXSW showcase.

GEIN, GIDGET - SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF
The multi-talented
ex-bassist for MARILYN MANSON. Artist, musician, author, funeral
assistant, and surrealistic "pop exploitationist". "Suspension of
Disbelief" is a representation of the sounds Gidget heard somewhere
"out there" while creating the "Unpop Can" painting that is represented
on the album cover. Although the painting leans towards Pop Art, the
(de)composition "Suspension of Disbelief" was influenced by the DaDa
movement. No conventional instruments were used in this effort -
rather, a Mac computer, antique toys, a gramophone and deconstruction
were responsible for making this disc possible.

GEIN, GIDGET - THE LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS
The multi-talented
ex-bassist for MARILYN MANSON. Artist, musician, author, funeral
assistant, and surrealistic "pop exploitationist". "The Law of
Diminishing returns" was recorded to convey the emotions surrounding
Gidget's scupture entitled "In Case of Emergency Break Heart". It is
meant as a soundtrack of sorts. It was recorded by Gidget at his
elusive Gollywood Studios, and all instruments and sounds are performed
by him alone, including but not limited to fuzz bass, accordian, jews
harp, and many more unmentionables. Added phantasmagoric guitar and
co-production are courtesy of Brian Butler.

GRADY, KRAIG - BEYOND THE WINDOWS PERHAPS AMONG TH
This CD marks the
premiere full length album by just-intonation composer and instrument
builder KRAIG GRADY outside of his documentation of the music of
Anaphoria Island. It is also the first recording of his music which
does not rely on his great skills as a performer or the instruments of
his own design or modification. Instead, in this 55 minute composition
Grady has chosen 6 of his favorite instrumentalists and vocalists from
a wide variety of backgrounds, each because of some unique quality that
he finds in their musicality. Grady calls upon these players to perform
pitches with extreme accuracy, but also to use the wide range of
timbres possible on their instruments or voices. This extremely
meditative yet somewhat intense composition explores a tuning called
Meta-Meantone - this tuning has the characteristics of exploiting a
variety of acoustical phenomenon ranging from equal beating chords to
the reinforcement of difference tone phenomenon. This is an entirely
acoustic recording with no processing effects of any kind. Originally
designed for his own personal use, Grady considers this one of his
finest compositions, performed exceptionally well, persuading him to
release this for the enjoyment of others.

Fourth full-length
by the Joshua Tree-based quartet who mix disco-pop, off-kilter country,
and psychedelic rock. Hailed as best new LA band in 2005 at the LA
Weekly Music Awards, their fanbase is sometimes referred to as a
self-styled "cult" called "The Royal Order of Rabbits". Watch for west
coast dates starting with an appearance on KCRW's "Mornings Become
Eclectic" on July 21st. The track "Off With Your Head" was featured on
the CW show "Life Unexpected" which aired 10/05/2010 (with identifying
ad card at the end) and a remake of "Candy Flip" will be the music for
a six month Kyocera/Android TV campaign commencing later in October! As
well, a track off the "Music To Start A Cult To" album will appear in a
Warner Bros Steve Carell movie next spring! USA Today on 10/19 said "If
there's any justice in the sandscape, CANDY FLIP will propel this
Joshua Tree, CA quartet the way ROCK LOBSTER did the B-52S, their
ancestors in witty, whacked-out dance ditties".

HARLEY, RUFUS - BAGPIPES OF THE WORLD
77 minutes recorded
in France with Rufus playing baby soprano sax and American bagpipes, in
tandem with a French bagpipe group (whose bagpipes have a completely
different tuning for a strange and somewhat mysterious-sounding
contrast). Rufus is also backed by a French jazz rhythm section on
several of the tracks and sings the definitive version of his signature
song, "Wake Up! It's Me!".
Second disc is a complete interview from just before his death, plus 20
minutes of music by one of his sons. Third disc captures Rufus live in
Jamaica.

HARLEY, RUFUS - RE-CREATION OF THE GODS
First time on CD for
this legendary funk/jazz/old school Bagpipe-lead-over-hot-band album
from 1972. Rufus was a saxophone player who also picked up the bagpipes
for a few excellent 60's albums for Atlantic Records, and although
those albums are great, this 1972 independent album is a real mind
blower! The original LP lists on E-Bay for $150, and this CD adds a 10
minute track not even on that album! Also reprints all the original
ultra-spiritual liner notes in an 8 page booklet, with superior
graphics. 2006 is the year of resurrection for Rufus: besides several
reissue projects for Transparency (including his guest appearance on
the Sun Ra DVD Volume 4), he is being reissued on individual CDs in
France, and an east coast label is compiling all of his Atlantic-era
albums into a box set!

Research Lab's GX Jupitter-Larsen, the Haters were formed in 1979 and
are known as America's premier noise act. They won Best Electronic
Experimental Artist in the 2005 LA Weekly music awards. These are brand

culmination of a four-year project by sound artists and instrument
inventors, Steve Barsotti and Eric Leonardson. Taking their cues from
20th century sound artist/inventors Luigi Russolo and Harry Partch, the
self-built instruments of Barsotti & Leonardson use coil springs,
eyebolts, various pieces of wood, and other familiar materials.
These objects are amplified by contact microphones, resulting in sounds

LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY - THE BLORP ESETTE GAZETTE VOL.1 (FALL 2013)
This is the Blorp
Esette Gazette. Thirteen years have gone by since this project was
first imagined, but it is here now, the LAFMS quarterly audio magazine.
This is the first issue, filled with many varied sounds from many
varied sources.
In 1977, Ace Farren Ford, one of the founding members of the Los
Angeles Free Music Society released a various artists compilation album
on the LAFMS label called Blorp Esette, a vinyl lp. In 1980 he released
Blorp Esette Volume 2, a double lp. In 1999 his own label Ace &
Duce teamed with the Transparency label to reissue these lps on cd and
added 2 cds of previously unreleased contributions. In 2011 the 4 cd
set was remastered by Ju Suk Reet Meate of Smegma and re-released.
In 2000 Mr. Ford came up with the concept of an audio magazine which
would feature contributions of various member of LAFMS, past and
present and would be a way of keeping it active. Now some 13 years
later it has become the Blorp Esette Gazette, a quarterly annual audio
magazine, the first edition of this to be released this fall on the Ace
& Duce / Transparency label. This first volume features
contributions by Keith Mitchell (Moniter, Mazzy Star), Moris Tepper
(Captain Beefheart), Kraig Grady, David Cotner, Smegma, Electric Bill
Robinson, Michael Intriere & Anna Homler, the Tenses, Dennis Duck,
Juan Gomez, the Mystery Band, Frank Bedal, Larry Easter (Linn County)
& more, with cover art by Ace Farren Ford and Ju Suk Reet Meate.

Latest solo album
from LANE STEINBERG, ex-mid-80s power pop trio THE WIND. One can say
that "Passion & Faith", Lane's third solo album, gives
schizophrenia a good name. How else to describe music of such unique
and bewitching eclecticism, where the ghosts of Noel Coward, Tom Jobim,
Jerry Garcia, and John Lennon appear in a juxtaposition that, through
Lane's vision, seem completely complimentary? As per usual, his
psychedelic, anything-goes, everything-in-the-blender approach to music
making creates an aural smoothie heretofore unthinkable. And in
addition to the extensive anglophile influences, thrown into the mix
for good measure are four covers of songs by the Clube da Esquina cadre
of songwriters from 70's era Minas Gerais, Brazil, all sung by Lane in
their native Portuguese. The centerpiece of the album, however, is a
21-minute personal take on the Grateful Dead's "Dark Star" with Lane
adapting the band's unique form of modal interplay into a solitary
exploration where he plays all the instruments himself, recreating the
Dead's golden era with uncanny accuracy, yet with his own personal
stamp. Besides this, there is a collaboration with the legendary R.
Stevie Moore, a Christmas song that takes place in Peru, an
acid-drenched version of Jobim's "How Insensitive", a completely
unironic calypso about bananas, and an adaptation of a gavotte for
string quartet by Zoltan Kodaly that sounds like Van Dyke Parks and
Brian Wilson taking a cue from "Eleanor Rigby". The one constant
throughout is Lane's clear tenor and his dexterous guitar work. If you
like homogenous albums, this may not be your cup of broth, but if you
like to be challenged and are open to the possibilities of where pop
could go, by virtue of where it's been, you might do yourself well to
have a little "Passion & Faith".

STINSON, TOMMY - COWBOYS IN THE CAMPFIRE - WRONGER
In plain words,
Tommy Stinson is a great American musician. You can needle-drop at any
juncture of the Minneapolis native's four-decade-plus career and find a
moment of great significance. Stinson was a founding and lifetime
member of the Replacements. He was a key second-generation ingredient
in Guns N' Roses and served a seven-year tenure with Soul Asylum. He
also led two essential bands of his own - the aptly named Bash &
Pop and Perfect.
Stinson's latest venture is called Cowboys in the Campfire - a duo with
good pal Chip Roberts - and its debut album, WRONGER, is perhaps the
most American album the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and
producer has ever made.
WRONGER's 10 tracks ride a giddy trail of twang and grit, melody and
(mostly lyrical) mayhem. The very first song, "Here We Go Again," sets
the tone; Stinson on ukulele, singing about the ardors of creativity,
while horns swell and there's not a hint of percussion other than the
perceptible tapping of feet by the musicians in the room. It's stark
and immediate, like sitting right in the middle of the maelstrom.

recorded in the San Francisco area in December 1974. Identified (by
ear) in the session are Sun Ra, John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Danny Ray
Thompson, James Jacson, Damon Choice, Akh Tal Ebah, Eloe Omoe, Clifford
Jarvis, Dale Williams, and others. As an Arkestra member once
commented, "The best music always came from the rehearsals", and here
is solid evidence to back that up!

SUN RA - THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE
Volume one in a new
series entitled "The Lost Reel Collection", and this one is the holy
grail of Sun Ra history! Two-CD set of the Arkestra playing live in a
SF warehouse in 1971, and a lecture by Ra from his legendary 1971
residency at UC Berkeley. Recently the Transparency label was
approached with a collection of eleven reel-to-reel tapes of previously
unknown Sun Ra recordings. None of this material is on any tape trader
list or in any discography. The recordings are all super-high-quality
and are being officially released on the Transparency label. Both discs
of "The Creator of the Universe" are from mid-1971. Disc One is a
concert at a warehouse in San Francisco, the centerpiece of which is a
very dramatic and intense 20 minute "Declamation" by Ra urging the
black race to rise up into freedom and identity, punctuated by the
horns of the Arkestra. Completely amazing, this piece is ranked by one
aficionado as the peak of Ra's career.
Disc Two is one of the classes given by Ra during his teaching
residency at UC Berkeley. This is a Sun Ra album like no other!

SUN RA - THE ROAD TO DESTINY (LOST REEL 6)
Last in the series
of 6 "Lost Reel" albums, this one captures the master live at the Gibus
in Paris on October 18, 1973. Recorded on stage by the group's drummer,
this ultra-rarity went unheard for 37 years and was previously unknown
to collectors or discographers. The centerpiece of the recording is a
28-minute vocal "cosmo-drama" between Sun Ra and June Tyson where they
meet somewhere in space on the road to destiny and have a brilliant and
funny discussion while the Arkestra plays continuously behind them.

Imagine the suspense
and anticipation one would feel when loading a 1970s Sun Ra reel onto a
deck for the first time in more that 30 years & not knowing what to
expect. As the tape starts, familiar sounds of the Arkestra begin to be
heard from that magical time period so long ago. There is a great sense
of relief and accomplishment to know music that laid dormant for far
too long, and was from one of the most original creators ever, would
now be preserved for all to finally hear. Volume 5 of "The Lost Reel
Collection" features music from two separate tapes. The first tape is
from a 1972 short recording at the Seaport Museum in New York City. The
acoustics sound like an outdoor concert. The featured track is
Discipline 27-ll, which is purely instrumental and may be the earliest
recording of this particular version. In 1973, Ra declamations like
"Life is Splendid" and "What Planet Is This?" were added on top of the
music theme.
The second tape is from a 1973 recording in Paris, France. Although the
acoustics are quite different, it's a natural segue from the Seaport
Museum tape. Opening with the Discipline 27-ll theme and the by-now
more familiar declamation there which we title as "The Universe Sent
Me" with this release. The beauty of the "reed" section is clearly
heard during this track due to the apparent close proximity of the tape
machine and the microphone setup.
Once again, as with the first 4 volumes of "The Lost Reel Collection",
the listener is in for a real treat.

TWO YEAR ABSENCE! A beautiful 99 minute performance from the Club
Lingerie in Hollywood, Dec.14, 1985, with amazing acoustic piano solos,
lots of vocals from Ra, June Tyson and various band members, and many
many surprises. Includes an extremely surreal 10 minute version of
"Mack The Knife" that Kurt Weill would have been proud of.
Documentation of the Arkestra shows in Los Angeles has so far been
sorely missing, but this high-quality recording (as part of the audio
series on Transparency) seeks to remedy that situation.
