of the week: Jeff Dahl - All My Friends Are Crows
Now it's no well-kept secret that I connect to Jeff Dahl's music more
than just swoony punk rock. Jeff Dahl himself connects me to a personal
friendship that has now lasted over 30 years. We stood on numerous
stages together in front of a partying congregation, sharing hotel
rooms and guitars. In Arizona, I even got to play solos on the "Leather
Frankenstein" album. So one could rightly assume that I'm not entirely
objective in judging a new Jeff Dahl record. True. I love Jeff Dahl's
music from A to Z, from the first single to this album. And with the
new release, Jeff thinks he's back in great shape. In this context, it
is particularly unfortunate that Corona has cut our 2020 2021 and 2022
tour plans. so be it. Jeff, now almost 70, plays with "Crows" the vast
majority of non-tone punk rock fans. Again he recorded everything
himself and again the songs unleash this special Dahl dynamic:
powerful, with flavors, hooks and melodies that immediately make me
dance. This music is as out as anything - and that's totally meant as
praise. The title track rocks that bend the beams. Manahampeetah might
become my new favorite song and Saint Lucifer is one of those great,
soulful mid tempo crackers that remind me of Radio Birdman. And some
songs bring back the old Angry Samoans feeling! Just listening to
Atomic Ant Invasion Dahl is back - best punk rock album in many years!

DONOVAN'S BRAIN - CHIEM BAO THAY BAU
Donovan's Brain
recently paused work on their new album to honor a request from an
independent experimental Vietnamese filmmaker known as Mr. Tam, for a
collection of soundtrack music. The music for the film Chiêm bao thay
Bau shows off a side of Donovan's Brain which is in contrast to the
usual high energy and liquid modern psych they are known for. An astute
listener would have noticed the strains of prog and the Krautrock
influences of Neu!, Cluster, Kraftwerk, and Harmonia that have appeared
in rationed doses in the past. A film soundtrack gave Donovan's Brain a
chance to share a full album in this style. Chiêm bao thay Bau is the
story of two lovers who can only meet in their dreams. The couple
struggle with the disorienting and often disturbing nature of the dream
life. Donovan's Brain have attempted to capture the ephemeral nature of
a dream world in eleven songs: five instrumentals and six vocal tracks.
Chiêm bao thay Bau is packaged in a full color triple wide gatefold CD
wallet.

DONOVAN'S BRAIN - CONVOLUTIONS OF THE BRAIN (BOX SET)
3 CD Box Set packaged in a DVD size 8 panel format with 20 page full
color booklet, detailed liner notes, an essay by Malcolm Morley From
Help Yourself. Limited to 500 copies.
Convolutions Of The Brain gathers together 49 songs, four hours of
unreleased studio recordings, rare compilation tracks, film music, live
performances, and remixed album tracks recorded between 1991 and 2017.
The centerpiece of the three-disc set is the Seattle Terrastock
Festival rehearsal sessions with Richard Treece.
Donovan's Brain has never been shy about showing their many facets.
They are equally comfortable with multi-colored psych, jangly pop,
extended West Coast guitar excursions, straight ahead rock, and synth
experiments. An extended cast that includes long time partners Deniz
Tek and Bobby Sutliff assists Main Brain Ron Sanchez. Guitarist Richard
Treece (RIP) from the UK cult band Help Yourself is featured on half
the songs. Help Yourself band mates Ken Whaley (RIP) and Malcolm Morley
also appear. Journeyman rockers Dave Walker (Savoy Brown) and Ric
Parnell (Spinal Tap) are also present. Every Brain line up is
represented including the current band.

Ten new original modern psych songs: West Coast guitars and UK melodic
influences
Members of the band: Ron Sanchez, Bobby Sutliff, Ric Parnell, Scott

The deaths of Ric Parnell in May and Bobby Sutliff in August shocked
the band and our extended family.
The surviving members of the band will continue. The next album is
currently under construction.
Bobby Sutliff's final solo album will be released this Fall on Career
Records
From Ron Sanchez: "Faith In Failure is a bittersweet affair. It
includes Bobby Sutliff's last two compositions and performances from
Ric Parnell's final recording session. Losing two core members was not
on the agenda for 2022. The last fourteen years have been the most
productive and creative period for the band in no small part due to the
talents Bobby and Ric brought to the table. Donovan's Brain will carry
on, paying tribute to our fallen friends with an eye to the future.

The hot house of creativity known as Donovan's Brain delivers fourteen
new musical hybrids with their ninth album Heirloom Varieties. The
reckless cross-pollination of ideas is hard to avoid in this Paisley
Underground recording collective which boasts four songwriters, five
vocalists and six guitar players. The track Lightning Life balances
dangerously on the shoulders of the thundering rhythm section powered
by Ric Parnell (Atomic Rooster) on drums, and bassist Tom Stevens. Tom
Stevens (Long Ryders) was invited to join The Brain primarily to fill
the bass position. Tom has also offered up his guitar skills and voice.

Melbourne
psychedelic stalwarts, The Sand Pebbles have a new album. This is their
first release in six years and their first US release. The Antagonist
is the seventh full length LP from this legendary group and will be
available on limited edition blended colour vinyl with a lovely insert
and gatefold CD. Both editions are in small numbers. The Sand Pebbles
psych sounds are a blend of Television-like dual guitar attack,
Krautrock/Eno textures and decidedly modern beats. Andrew Tanner's
strong voice gives the band a classic folk feel. Think Fred Neil. The
Sand Pebbles show their Melbourne roots, the town that has given us
Nick Cave, Dave Graney, Kim Salmon and Penny Ikinger. Members of the
group also release records as The Woodland Hunters and Silver Sun.

SUTLIFF, BOBBY - BOB SINGS AND PLAYS
A minor hero of Southern power pop, Bobby Sutliff was the co-founder
and one of the key creative minds behind the Windbreakers, a group who
were celebrated by critics and their peers in their '80s heyday for
their smart, melodically inventive tunes and sharp guitar work. (The
2003 compilation Time Machine [1982-2002] is an excellent introduction
to their work.) Sutliff cut a pair of low-key solo albums during his
days with the Windbreakers, and after they broke up in the early '90s,
he opted not to make music his career but continued to write and record
on his own schedule, and his emotionally generous and intelligently
tuneful approach was on fine display on 2003's Perfect Dream and 2007's
On a Ladder. Bobby started writing songs for this album in 2011. He
never intended them to be released in any format. He worked and
recorded mostly in his home studio in his garage. He completed the
album in May 2022 three months before he passed August 29, 2022.

TEK, DENIZ - LONG BEFORE DAY
Deniz Tek has
delivered Long Before Day, his fifth album for
Career Records/Cobraside (USA), and Wild Honey Records (Europe). Deniz
explores his many influences drawing on his signature Radio Birdman
sound and more evolved vocals as the jumping off point. Taking One For
The Team evokes Exile period
Stones. Truck and Roll puts Chuck Berry in a semi. Ain't Gonna
(Stand for That) is a revolutionary anthem. Where is a soulful
reckoning that the hour is late. One of the album's highlights, Speak
of Ice is an introspective dreamscape with lyrics inspired by
fourteenth century Persian poetry and riffs via Howlin' Wolf. The nod
to country blues is a recurring theme heard throughout the album.
Deniz took advantage of the two year tour hiatus on a Hawaiian
coffee farm to compose the carefully constructed guitar
arrangements. Anne Tek brought her experience playing live with
Deniz to the studio for her recording debut. The two guitars
weave through all thirteen songs.
Keith Streng from The Fleshtones trades his guitar for the drums, his
first instrument. Deniz's long time musical partner Bob Brown produced
and engineered the album and plays bass. Veteran Texas-based producer
Andy "Mort" Bradley mixed Long Before Day, pulling all the elements
together.

guitarist and founding member of legendary Australian proto-punk band
Radio Birdman. This is the third Deniz Tek solo album for Career Record
in five years. All guitar instrumentals, music for and imaginary film.

and Mean Old Twister:

Ten songs, six brand new compositions. Vanished is an unreleased Radio
Birdman song, Song For Dave is a remodeled, remixed version of a rare
tour single b-side.
Recorded fresh off a 30 day US and European tour, Deniz will be touring
Australia and Europe with Radio Birdman this fall.

TEK, DENIZ - MEAN OLD TWISTER
Deniz Tek felt the
need to strike while the iron was hot and began work on Mean Old
Twister in 2013 just as Detroit album was being released. Recorded
between Radio Birdman tours, the new album captures the live experience
with some new sonic textures added to the mix.
Mean Old Twister was recorded with the same band which appeared on
Detroit. Drummer Ric Parnell is best known for his work in Spinal Tap
and Atomic Rooster. Bassist Bob Brown has been working with Deniz since
the Australian tour supporting Taking It To The Vertical, Deniz's first
solo album. Radio Birdman cohort Rob Younger stepped in to supervise
the mix, adding another sharp ear to the process. Twelve songs, twelve
different emotions. Slashing guitars are the theme of this trip. Burned
Black sets the tone right at the start. The shimmering surf
instrumental Comanche winds down the first side. The autobiographical
Stonsey country ballad Table For One is the lone quiet moment. Free At
Last, an acoustic folk song is the only diversion from the electric
guitar attack on the second side. Deniz Tek is effortlessly creating
top shelf albums 40 years into his career. The vinyl release features a
Deniz Tek painting as the cover art. Deniz's iconic Epiphone guitar is
featured on the CD cover.

TEK, DENIZ & THE GODOYS - FAST FREIGHT
Fast Freight is the new album from Deniz Tek with Art and Steve Godoy.
Art and Steve are internationally known skateboard stars, tattooists
and punk rockers. They have been in Deniz' solo band for more than 20
years. The first album they appeared on with Deniz was Glass Eye World,
billed as Deniz Tek and the Golden Breed .
Deniz, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, is known as a founding
member of the Australian based band Radio Birdman. He has maintained a
prolific career in both live performance and recording. His work spans
multiple decades. He has toured extensively in Australia, North
America, Europe, and Asia.
He is an inductee in the Australian Music Hall of Fame and was voted
number 7 of the top 100 Australian guitarists of all time by Australian
Guitar Magazine.
Fast Freight is basic, no-frills electric guitar rock and roll with a
punk edge, recorded and mixed entirely on vintage analog equipment.
Following the recent all-instrumental Lost For Words, and the rock
album Mean Old Twister, replete with keyboard and horn arrangements,
Fast Freight is a return to basic roots.
