BLACK & WYATT		 HEATHENS, THE - STEADY GIRL

Saturday, December 8th, 1956: Four days after Elvis, Carl, Johnny, and Jerry Lee recorded the 'Million Dollar Quartet Session', five East High School students known as The Heathens (named after 15 year-old lead singer Colin Heath) entered Sun Studio to record a song he had written with a female classmate (and rhythm guitar player) Kaye Garren called "Steady Girl". Classmen Roger Fakes played lead guitar and Joe Bauer (later of The Youngbloods) played drums. David Gibson played piano on one of two takes. Sam Phillips was probably not there that day, so it is likely that Jack Clement or Marion Keisker produced the session, but there's no way to ever know for certain. Both takes were cut straight to a 78 rpm acetate disc (live with no overdubs and no mixing) as these teenagers banged away inside Sun Studio on that weekend afternoon. When the smoke cleared, both takes of "Steady Girl" were too raw even by Sun Records standards, so the Heathens were never called back and the lacquer master remained unheard. Sixty-three years later, it's easy to wax romantic about a lost and primitive rock & roll recording, but considering the time, place, energy, and innocence, I've never heard anything like this before. On July 8, 1954 Dewey Phillips introduced Elvis to Memphis (and subsequently the world) when he played "That's Alright (Mamma)" during his Red, Hot and Blue show on radio station WHBQ broadcasting from the Chisca Hotel. Sixty-five years later to the day, Mario Monterosso entered the hallowed space of Sun Studio to record "Steady Girl" and "Waiting for a Beer" for Black & Wyatt Records. Mario (lead vocals and lead guitar) was accompanied by Steve Clark (upright bass) and Aaron Mlasko (drums). Rob Haynes played piano on "Waiting for a Beer." This 7" record covers "Steady Girl" which was recorded in 1956 at Memphis Recording Service (Sun Studio). The B-side is "Waiting for a Beer" written and performed by Mario. The record will be released on January 17, 2020 with a release show that evening at 8:00 PM at Hernando's Hideaway.

Fingers Like Saturn were a Memphis rock & roll band that performed and recorded from 2006-2008. Band members were George Cole (Distemper, Pig Star, Rockroaches), Steve Selvidge (Bash & Pop, Big Ass Truck, Sons of Mud Boy), Suzi Hendrix (Viva L'American Deathray Music), Shelby Bryant (The Clears, Cloud Wow Music), Jonathan Kirkscey (Mouse Rocket, Memphis Symphony) Mike McCarthy (Distemper, Nehilistics) and singer Cori Dials (The Splints, Cigarette Girl-movie). The 8 tracks on the record were recorded at Sun Studio and Steve Selvidge's home studio. The record has glam-rock influences with all songs written by Mike McCarthy. Satnin' is about Elvis' mother Gladys and his still-born brother, Jesse.

Tyler Keith was born in the panhandle of Florida. After High School, he moved to Mississippi to study writing at Ole Miss with Barry Hannah. Instead of graduating from college, he joined some bands, most notably the Neckbones (SOULS ON FIRE, THE LIGHTS ARE GETTING DIM, Fat Possum) making four albums with that group and touring the States and Europe extensively. In the first decade of the 2000s he fronted the band, Tyler Keith and the Preacher's Kids, making three records, ROMEO HOOD, WILD EMOTIONS, and THE DEVIL'S HITLIST. Tyler Keith's newest album, his thirteenth, is a solo project, rock n roll album made with Bronson Tew on drums, recording, engineering, and other things, and a few other friends, recorded at Dial Back Studios in Waster Valley Mississippi.

Lost Weekend is Jack Oblivian's 8th solo album and is mostly comprised of early versions of Jack's songs and instrumentals as they were recorded in his apartment. Jack talks about how the record came about in a recent interview with Memphis filmmaker, Mike McCarthy: Mike: What is the history of the songs and how do they break down on previous releases? Jack: In the past years around 2009 or 10 or something like that I wanted to make a mix tape as a cassette release and call it "After Party." I wanted to record an 8-track tape of songs also as a sort of alternative. The whole concept was anything that was recorded in the apartment where I live now - and have been living for a long time - whether it was me playing on it or not. Usually I am playing on everything. That was the ultimate thing and out of that idea I ended up making a cassette of the music I did. Three years ago, I pressed-up 200 cassettes of almost an hour long set with just these random instrumentals and songs that ended up being on other records somewhere. Ultimately, I narrowed the "LOST WEEKEND" LP down to the better stuff from the tape. I cut out a lot of stuff that was really noisy. Mike: You live in your studio? Jack: Yep, I live there. The tape's always rolling.

Album of the Week: JACK OBLIVIAN AND THE SHEIKS - 'Lone Ranger of Love' "Jack Oblivian is a legend of Memphis garage rock and hometown label Black & Wyatt is giving us an early Christmas present with the vinyl re-release of the 2016 Jack Oblivian and the Sheiks album 'Lone Ranger of Love'. Jack initially released the album on his own label - Mony Records and it has long been sold out. Diehards will recognize a few tracks from the 2019 release 'Lost Weekend' but here he is backed by The Sheiks and a few friends and they kick things up a notch or two especially on a track like the garage rock stomper 'Boy in a Bubble.' The Sheiks have been Jack's band since 2014 and have performed as a trio of Keith Cooper (lead guitar), Frank McLallen (bass guitar) and Graham Winchester (drums). In 2015 Seth Moody joined Jack's band on saxophone, keyboards and guitar... 'Lone Ranger of Love' is clearly an example of a pro making the album he wants to make and we're all better off for it. Formed during the summer of 2018, Opossums is the brainchild of Patrick Jordan (Vocals, Guitar). The band was created to put a new spin on Jordan's previously released lo-fi home 4-track recordings. To do so, Mississippi transplants Jesse Mansfield (Bass, Production) and Liv Hernandez (Drums) were recruited to give the songs a more immediate "live" feel. To date, they have released two mini albums of punchy, concise "garage pop" songs and one full length LP on Memphis based label Black & Wyatt Records collecting their favorite cuts from the two. The long history of Memphis power pop, punk rock, and garage rock is a pronounced influence on their music, as well as British Invasion, 60's psych nuggets, and breakneck English punk rock. They cut to the chase by plugging straight in, recording live to tape at home, minimizing overdubs, and keeping songs relatively unembellished. They are currently touring around the southeast region of the country. Initial pressing limited to 300 copies.

Jeremy Scott wrote all but one of the songs and does lead vocals and guitar.. He was bass player for the original Reigning Sounds. The Toy Trucks are collectively 180+ years old and are fueled by equal parts cheap beer, cheap thrills and Cheap Trick. Over the band's multi-year existence, songwriter/leader Jeremy Scott (ex-Reigning Sound) has developed an "anything but another crappy love song" ethos which has resulted in the songs on the band's first full-length, Rockets Bells and Poetry. ("We stole the title from Mama Cass Elliott," Scott explains.) Over the course of said album, the band (Scott, guitarist Dylan Cranmer, bassist Ryno Hanson and drummer Steve Barnat) prove conversant with, among other things, Rascals-like blue-eyed grooves (Don't Be So Easy), grisly true crime balladry (57 Bayview), updated Del Shannonesque psychodrama (Hot Tears) and honest flat out rock and roll (I'm on the Dish But I Ain't No Rag). As both a stand-alone statement and a teaser for the band's revved up live show, Rockets Bells and Poetry should satisfy anyone's rock/garage/power-pop itch quite nicely.

Cut You Off is the debut album for the Turnstyles with Seth Moody on guitar and Graham Winchester on the drums. Moody and Winchester play together in the Jack Oblivian Band, Cassette Set, and many other projects, but as a high-energy duo they specifically explore surf rock, psych rock, and classic rock n' roll. Graham, 1st cousin once removed, was the great Jesse Winchester and his day job is tour guide at the legendary Sun Studio. Seth moved from Wilmington, North Carolina for the Rock and Roll in 2016 after a brief stop over in Tennessee's other music city, memorialized on the album's first track - Cashville..
