CHURCHBURN - NONE SHALL LIVE... THE HYMNS OF MISERY
Churchburn is the
musical collaboration between two of the undergrounds masters of
misery. Dave Suzuki, best known for his mesmerizing guitar work and
brutal drumming in Vital Remains and Ray McCaffrey, who carved out
sonic drum patterns for Sin Of Angels and Grief. The two have set out
to share with the world their love of the riff. Not only the heaviest
but also the most haunting. Each song is crafted with the most sinister
of intent. Churchburn want the listener to feel a true sense of dread
as each song progresses.
For added discomfort within the music, the band had two special guests:
Andy Grant of The Vomit Arsonist for his black ambience. Our metal
brother, former member Mike Cardoso on backing vocals. Churchburn have
also brought on two new members, both of whom have already made their
own marks in previous R.I. bands: Timmy St. Amour (Howl) on guitar and
Derek Moniz (Headrot, Wreak, Black Acid Prophecy...too many to mention)
on bass. Their input and musicianship really elevate the new album.

DROPDEADs long
awaited third album, recorded by KURT BALLOU and ZACH WEEKS at God City
and mastered by BRAD BOATRIGHT at Audiosiege. Musically, the third
Dropdead album is a bit different from previous recordings, style-wise
and vocally, with the latter being delivered so the words have an
impact more so than just raw screaming. With 23 songs in 24 minutes,
the songs themselves vary much more in tempo and style, but ultimately,
it's a Dropdead record that makes sense in 2020. Lyrically, this record
is relevant to the times we live in, focused on the alarming state of
the world, the disturbing rise of right-wing extremism, animal abuse,
and the continued social failures of humankind. "These are dark times
we find ourselves living in," says the band, "and this is how we vent
our frustration and anger in a positive way."

DROPDEAD - DEMOS 1991
This LP compiles the
first and second demos plus one compilation track all recorded in 1991.
Raw primitive versions of songs that the band started with and slowly
developed into tracks for the early EPs and first LP, plus a couple
relevant covers. Some of these tracks are still played at live shows
today in 2020 almost 30 years later. Demo one has 17 songs recorded at
WRIU live to reel to reel and has been restored by Kurt Ballou at God
City. Demo two has 8 tracks recorded on a home 4 track, original
unmixed master cassette given to Chris Corry at the Paincave to
restore. Several on this tracks were never before released. The final
track is a completely Hellhammer style version of the outro to Kiss'
Black Diamond recorded for a local Providence Kiss covers cassette,
many years later it was included on a vinyl 8" record that accompanied
Rocktober Magazine issue 22. All in all a rough, noisy & raw
document from the early days released on vinyl for the first time. Ltd
colored vinyl in heavyweight jacket with printed innersleeve and
download card.

original pressings. The second album of sonic-grind, total obliti-core
from Rhode Island's deafening devastators. Eighteen angry
hardcore/thrash songs. 18 songs in a decidedly more Swedish HC vein,
but with the usual odd breaks and fast parts throughout. More melodic
than the first LP in some ways, and noisier in others.

Elder is a heavy psych band from Boston, USA. Founded by long-time
friends Nicholas DiSalvo, Jack Donovan and Matt Couto, the group spent
years plodding in Sabbathian territory, releasing their self-titled
debut 2007, followed by "Dead Roots Stirring" in 2011. They also
released a two song EP "Spires Burn / Release" in 2012 showing musical
growth in a more refined vision of the band's sound. Their third full
length "Lore" is a watershed moment in the band's history. Joining the
interplay of heaviness and melody which has become the hallmark Elder
sound are a host of new meanderings through uncharted kosmische
territory; krautrock, prog as well as classic heavy rock and doom can
all be heard unfolding throughout the record's five songs. While
Elder's sound is now much more evloved and varied, it is still
consistently based around rock and metal, originally influenced by such
heavy landmark bands as Black Sabbath, Sleep and Electric Wizard.

In the last dozen
years, Elder has stepped out of the shadows of their peers in the heavy
rock underground to emerge a unique voice, delivering album after album
of almost unparalleled consistency and creativity. Omens, the band's
fifth full-length record, is the newest pillar in the construction of
their own musical universe. With it, Elder further embrace
experimentation in their brand of progressive psychedelic rock in which
atmosphere, melody and structure are created and transformed again and
again.
Following 2017's Reflections of a Floating World and the 2019
experimental EP The Gold & Silver Sessions, it was anyone's guess
what the band's next full-length might have in store. Having cemented
their own sound - a dense yet lucid brand of heavy rock full of
unexpected flourishes and progressive jaunts - the latter EP showcased
an exact opposite side of Elder, more rooted in sparse krautrock and
even jazz-tinged jams. Omens answers this speculation with a
contradiction that embodies the spirit of Elder: somehow, there's even
more everything.
In five cinematic songs, lush, intricately interwoven melodies grow and
dissolve into spaced-out jams. Massive riffs thunder down into a
churning sea of psychedelic sounds and unpredictable grooves carry away
the listener. Elder paints pictures with their music, and Omens shows
the band experimenting with an even more colorful palette - with good
reason. After thirteen years, this is the first full-length recorded
with a new lineup including guitarist Michael Risberg and new drummer
Georg Edert, along with guest performances by Fabio Cuomo on Rhodes
piano and synthesizers.
This is music for a vacation from reality - or to lose oneself in
another world. And yet Omens is not purely an exercise in escapism, but
also reflects the increasingly bleak, confusing and antagonistic times
in which it was written. Composed as a concept album spanning the
lifespan of a civilization, the album also reads as a commentary on our
own society hell-bent on profitability at the expense of our own lives
and environment.
Omens was recorded and mixed at Black Box Studios in France with
engineer Peter Deimel (Shellac, dEUS, Motorpsycho) and mastered by Carl
Saff in Chicago. The result is an album that is rich, warm and dynamic,
presenting the many layers of Elder's complex sound clearly and
offering new discoveries with every listen.

FIT FOR ABUSE - MINDLESS VIOLENCE
This Massachusetts
HC classic finally sees the light of day again, reissued after 17
years. The 12 tracks have been mastered at New Alliance East, pressed
on 150 gram vinyl, housed in a heavy duty Stoughton tip-on jacket,
includes a 12x12 insert and download with bonus track. Fit For Abuse
started in the winter of 1995 inspired to play hardcore in the vein of
classic bands like Negative FX, Poison Idea, Gang Green and Negative
Approach. After numerous local shows and one demo, in September of 1996
FFA recorded these 12 tracks with Kurt Ballou of Converge in his
original 8-Track home studio. The "Mindless Violence EP" was originally
released in a pressing of 1000 copies in early 1997, and repressed one
time in 1998. Urban HC legend has it that several more tracks were
recorded at the same time, but so far have been impossible to track
down... beyond one cover song, "Nuclear Threat" originally by The
Abused. Not long after the original record came out, singer Matt Kelly
was asked to join the Dropkick Murphys as their drummer. He made the
choice to leave FFA due to his nonstop touring schedule. The band
decided to continue on without him. Over the years, Joe continued
playing music with Think I Care, R'n'R, Vaccine and others. Muzzi was
in Out Cold for a while. Matt is still in The Dropkick Murphys. Where
everyone else is, well who knows. "Mindless Violence" made a mark in
the 1990's for some of us, an often underrated and constantly
overlooked piece of Massachusetts musical history. Hopefully now this
properly mastered version will leave it's mark on a new generation of
hardcore fans, and make some older ones clean the wax out of their
ears. 12 songs. Hardcore done the way it's meant to be done, with no
bullshit added.

KADAVAR & ELDER - ELDOVAR: A STORY OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT
Berlin's most
important rock band Kadavar collude with US prog rock wunderkinder
Elder, and decided to drown in sound together. What surfaced is "A
Story of Darkness & Light", a marvel of musical liberty, a gushing
opus between rock, prog and alternative, held together by the two
bands' contrasts. Tiger Bartelt, Lupus Lindemann, and Simon Bouteloup
of Kadavar as well as Michael Risberg, Nick DiSalvo, and Georg Edert of
Elder (minus bassist Jack Donovan who wasn't allowed to travel from the
US) extract an arcane and fleeting magic from the primordial broth of
rock, the kind of magic that can only work when everything is in fluid.
When nothing is disturbing the creative process, when there is no
external or internal pressure whatsoever. Never before did the music of
these bands breathe in such a way. Never before did they sound as
versatile, as surprising and as peculiar as they do here..
